back combing help

Help! Save My Dreads

I started by backcombing in the first week of April. A lot of my dreads cam completely out. Some of the congo'd so I pulled apart a few but I really just let them go.Now after 6 months of just washing and a little twisting here and there mostly for a neat look (it really doesn't do much to help the locks) my dreads are pretty cool.I have made plans to have a major maintenance session, mostly because it is with a super cute little Jamaican woman who ran up on my hair at the beach and professed her love for white girls with dreads! Hahaha!Anyway! :) I'd definitely say let them go from here. Get to know them and separate when it feels natural, wash when it feels necessary, and love those babies!I wrap them on and off at night, never tried a wool cap but it seems to be a favored method by other members.Good luck! :)

Well the back combing pretty much came undone on most of them except for the back of my head so taking them apart wont be hard. I was just contemplating it bcuz back combing did mad damage to my scalp so I wanted to start fresh.

I screwed up, and I need advice.

Dread Maintenance

Tho I don't condone using all of their products, the shampoo from deadhead hq is great. You can order it online or look up retailers. No credit card, I put $20 on a prepaid visa from 711(idk if you've got them by you) and got mine.Good luck and happy dreading!

Decorated Dreadieeeeeeeeeeeeeees

Dread Accessories

Show us some pics! :)I've got a few help and thread wraps. Some are full wraps and some are just kinda criss crossed around. Some wooden beads of different sizes and shapes. Mostly earthy tones and natural wood now but I change them up. I have some beads I've painted or drawn on. I also like to get sea shells that have holes and tie them in with whatever else I've got going on.Flowers on and off and different strands of ribbon and fabric that I take in and out.I have a lot of fun dressing them up! Yours sound so cool I'd really love to see them!

Regretting backcombing, what now?

Help! Save My Dreads

Thank you so much! I've only been twisting or rollingafter I wash, but couldn't really tell if it was helping or making them worse, so I appreciate your advice.I was sleeping with a stocking, then a tam, then a bandana and then on and off with all of them and lots of times down, so now I'll just stop and sleep freely hahaThanks again, you have great dreads!

Some of my dreads were backcombed. I do not regret it one bit. No matter which method you use, You are gonna loose length. My hair was to my lower back when i started. It shrank up to above my shoulders. The back combed ones lost the length on the first day, the TnR ones shrank next. The neglect were the last to shrink, but they actually shrunk the most. My dreads were about 2 years old before i noticed any lengthening.

Palm rolling is a waist of time. It does very little but has the potential to break off hair at the roots when done aggressively. Twisting can cause lots of damage. Twisting is a starter method that only people with African type hair should use. Even then, it should be done in the very beginning and not used for maintenance. Just leave them alone, let em knot on their own.

Your babies are only 3 months old. They are not mature dreads yet. It is perfectly normal for them to be loose in some places and tighter in others. And roots will be all over the place. That is just the way it is.

I always wear my hair loose when I sleep. I have known other people who sleep in wool tams. Wool tams encourage knotting.

Help! Save My Dreads

So my baby dreads are 3 months old, and some are real tight and some are totally loose and coming apart. The sectioning in the back is a little funky, and my roots are all over the place.I'm wondering if I should keep maintaining them with some palm rolling and twisting, or if I should leave them alone for a while. Some of them have started to congo, most in a good way so I'm letting them join together.Should I sleep with them wrapped, or with them loose so they can knot up how they want?My other question is about the length. My hair was to my elbows and the backcombing was done so tight that they are barely shoulder length. Will they start to loosen any?

Chlorine and dreading?

Dread Maintenance

Yeah this is a great discussion, I was coming on to start one about the same thing. I know that we want our dreads to dry out but I can't tell if the chemicals will cause them to break or smell or what. Like you I go in my pool a lot and really don't want to have to wash them every time. I was trying to invent a leak proof water proof wrap but have failed so far haha!

Bead question about sizes amount and maintanance.

Dread Accessories

To get mine on I take a thin thread covered rubberband and just put it halfway thru the bead, then my dread thru the one of the loops and pull it thru the bead. Easy peasy.I put them in and take em out. For fun, for fashion, for covering stubborn loops or frays. I love them!
