Re twist and rip

Dread Maintenance

It will slow down thematuring process, just like re-backcombing will. There shouldn't be any need to do anything besides wash and separate :)

Coconut Oil, Palm Rolling, and loose hairs/ends.

Dread Maintenance

No palm rolling, its dumb and doesn't do much, if anything at all. Baba fats has a video showing why excessive palm rolling is bad, watch it!

No bands either. They can actually weaken and break hairs causing your dreads to be weak later on. How old are your dreads? Loose crazy hairs will get sucked in eventually, its nothing to worry about especially in the early stages :)

As for coconut oil, I don't know much about putting it in your hair. But I use it for a few things, and I think it might be too thick to use in hair :/ Aloe is good for moisture and conditioning.

My roots are freaking out!

General Questions

My dread sections or the sections of matted hair? My dreads are pretty small, used about 3/4 inch sections because my hair is thick. The sections of matted hair under them are on both sides of my head (I'm guessing because I sleep on my side), and they take up about the size of my palm on each side.

I will try to get a finger under there next time I wash and try and rip some of them apart. When I separate I pull as hard and far as I can without it hurting, and until I can't hear any more ripping hairs. I don't think I can separate them any more than I already do.

My roots are freaking out!

General Questions

Hi SE,

I DO!! thats the problem. I don't know what else to do. I stay on top of it almost everyday. It is in the spots where I sleep and its basically like my scalp has a dread with dreads coming out of it! I'm not letting it get worse but it is a little annoying, it looks fine but its just irritating cause I can't scratch under it :(

My roots are freaking out!

General Questions

Hi everyone!

So here's my deal. Originally, I was sucked in to the backcombing and sectioning method. I really really really regret this, but I'm 2 months along, and my hair is very curly and coarse naturally, so these dreads are not coming out. So aside from starting over like everyone recommends, what can I do?

My roots seem to have matted together. Literally, I have sections of my head with like 10 dreads that the roots are connected to eachother. It is not like a congo, more like just a mess of matted hair underneath my dreads. If I pull one dread up, the rest move because they are attached. Does anyone else have this issue? Is there anything I should do? Or will it just be like that?

I am fine with the way it looks, my whole head is a clusterf*ck of short and long, curly, loose hairs, loops, bumps and everything else. Any advice?

scalp gunk, really annoying, tried everything

Help! Save My Dreads

Is your scalp gunk oily or chalky? If its chalky then yes I would suspect it is the baking soda. But if its oily, it could be due to your scalp adjusting to washing less often. When youwash oftenand do it everyday or every other day for years your scalp will start to overproduce oil. Once you stop, it will still over produce causing oil buildup. This happened to me during the first month and every time i scratched my head I had gross gunk under my nails. But it has subsided since my scalp has adjusted. If this sounds like your problem, just wait it out.. our bodies have ways of correcting itself!

Hi everyone!

Introduce Yourself

Hey, I'm Jenna. I'm from Oregon. After about 3 years contemplating dreads, I finally did it! My little dread babies are a month old now, and I am so happy I got them started. I backcombed them a little bit to get them started (if I didn't my hair would just lump into one big dread because it was so curly and frizzy!), then just let them do their own thing, and they are progressing beautifully. A few are splitting apart, and some growing together. I am so excited to see what they decide to do!
