Introduce Yourself

Hello my fellow dreadies. My name is Paul and thanks to SE's video on youtube I found this great community here. I have always wanted dreads as long as I can remember. I was not able to start growing them due to my parents during my adolescent years, when I got married and had kids my wife would not support me in this journey and lastly the professional jobs I had would not allow it. So the last year and a half I just started letting my hair grow and since I was able to wear a hat at work I was able to just tuck my hair up and figured I could get away with that for a while. Well in the middle of Oct I married my girlfriend of 4 years and when we got back from our honeymoon I was laid off. I figured this was the right time to start growing dreads and had several discussions with my wife. She is very supportive of everything I do and want to do. So I decided to start my dreads on Jan. 1st. Well I had a hard time trying to find information on dreads, I know people who did the whole back comb and wax and to me they just look to perfect (manufactured) and they had them done as a hair style not a way of life. After watching SE's video I started lurking on this site reading everything I could, pro's and con's and what I was looking for spiritually. I finally decided on Dec. that I was starting my journey and I did. Tomorrow will be 2 months and I can't even express what this has done for me inside and out. I had already started changing my life 2 years ago religiously reading Buddhism, Rastafarian and soul searching. I had a really bad first marriage and I needed to cleanse my body and soul. We also started a Raw food diet 14 months ago and am really seeing the benefits of that. Now adding in dreads I feel free. I am doing and living the way I want. Not everyone agrees with it or respects it but it's not for them. The only fear I have is not being able to find a job. I am still unemployed and the type of work I do is professional with lots of meetings. The town I live in is very accepting of my type of life style or others like me. I am sure I will find a job but it won't be the type of job I used to have. That's ok with me since we also started simplifying our lives and home. As long as I can make enough to support the household I will be happy. So in a nut shell that's my story. Looking forward to making many new friends here. Peace and blessings to all

7 Weeks In

Member Journals and Timelines

Well after 20+ years of wanting dreadlocks I finally got the opportunity to start them. I knew I did not want perfect overnight dreadlocks so I started doing research in late Oct. to find other ways of dreading. After finding this site I knew free form was the way to go. As everyone on this board says free form is not for everyone. It has helped me along my spiritual path that I have been on the last 1-2 years. With loosing my job in Oct. I have done some real soul searching and this path has helped me. I do worry about not being able to find a job in the line of work I was in but we shall see. Anyway I started on Dec. 2nd, washed with regular shampoo and 3 days later started the BS/ACV wash. I now alternate the dread shampoo and BS/ACV wash. Here is the pic I took on Dec. 2nd. and on one I took the other day. The biggest problem I have (not really a problem just part of the process) is my hair try's to Congo like crazy. I tried to only operate on the days I wash after I shower but if I only separate every 3 days it's almost impossible. My hair is like a rats nest every day. The other thing I am noticing is the hair on the back of my head under the dreads that started won't knot up. I know over time they will. I'd love any advice or comments the board has for me. This is a great site and awesome community, thanks for letting me be part of it. Blessings to all

would you cut your dreads for a million dollars? (very serious and real question)

General Talk

Sounds like this might be a test for yourself. It would be hard for any of us to give you the right advice. You said you live paycheck to paycheck. If you get along fine with that then I would turn it down and keep them locks. I am also 39, been divorced and have 3 kids. I have had ups and downs and the last 10 years they have been up financially at least until recently. I have been through hard times without money before so I know I can get through it. The big questions is can you live without the money? Sounds like your parents are still trying to control you and what you do. That's a hard lesson to learn. Either do as they ask or cut your ties. With money brings more problems, do you really want more problems? Sure you set yourself up for the rest of your life but at what expense. Another point is you can't take it with you when you leave this life. I would rather be rich in Karma than rich with money. Even though I struggle everyday and still have kids to raise I learn a new lesson (outlook) that I wouldn't have taken the time to realize had I not started my journey in this spiritual journey. To answer your question for me it would be don't take the money. Maybe you will teach your parents a life lesson, you never know. Peace and blessings to you and your son.

I have all three shampoos and just rotate them depending on what my mood is in. I can't say I have a favorite because I love all three of those smells.

use it a few times. wash every 2-3 days. I started with every 2 days and noticed how clean and dry my hair was. It would knot up really well. The first time I wash it seemed like it loosened all my knots and my hair was a mess. I thought damn!!!!!! but after finding my rotation and days of washing I notice a big difference. I rotate every other wash shampoo and bs/ac. And I add some shampoo to the bs. Give it another go and lets us know what you come up with.

What I do is mix the banking soda, sea salt and about a 1/4 tsp dread shampoo and mix that in a jug to wash. I like the combination cause the bs cleans the dead skin, shampoo cleans the hair and the salt helps the locking. Then I let sit for 5 min. rinse well with water and then do one last rinse with the AC wash and leave that in. My hair locks hard the first two days after this wash.

Is it ok to use baking soda on the scalp first and then use a dread bar soap on the rest of the hair?

To start off if you have not tried this fantastic shampoo you need to get to Vicki's site and order some. I have ordered twice from Vicki and both times her service has been outstanding. This second time I received a damaged package so I sent Vicki and email over the weekend and she responded right away to let me know she was sorry and ship out another one. Sure enough it was in the mail on Monday and received it by the end of the week as well as a bar sample. For me service is everything and Vicki is top notch. Now on to the products. I have tried all three scents of shampoo and they are all amazing. I have hard water and so far this is by far the best shampoo that has worked for me. Not only is my hair clean, smell good but it has been locking up great since I started using it. Please help support this great product. I wash about every 2-3 days am all natural and just letting it do it's thing.
