T&R Maintenance Questions

Dread Maintenance

Sleeping in a tam will help the roots stay tight. Or when you wash your hair rub the shampoo (if you use it) into your scalp like you're a little kid. Or... maybe you'll be like me and have issueswithyour dreads getting too close to the scalp on their own! I have to condition my rootsbecausei roll around so much in my sleep they get super matted and it hurts sometimes .

As far as the frizzies go: wearing a tam will help this too. Kind of like the hat hair you hated pre dread. aloe vera helps but I wouldn't recomend it every day since it's conditioning and it takes hella long.

The plus side (which I am sure you don't want to hear) is that these things work themselves out with time. I'm about a year and have very little frizz... at least compared to where i was at 2-6 months... Then I looked like I was from the 80s. Also your dreads will mature and most roots are about 1/4 to 1 inch from the scalp, which isn't very far at all.

Good luck, sister!

Shampoo?

Dread Products

My husband uses both normal shampoo AND conditioner on his hair. How 1/2 of it is dreaded is beyond me. I wouldn'trecommendthis.

I started with Dr. B's peppermint but had hard city water... I've found the tea tree works better but still leaves a bit of a film after a few months. When i first started dreading I used that dead sea soap that pushy salesman used to force on you at the mall. (on a side note: Do they still do that? I haven't been to a mall in years) It worked REALLY well because of the sea salt in it :)

ATM I do Dr B's some washes and BS/ACV others. I love the way my dreadies feel after acv sooooooo soft

Election poll....

General Talk

Disclaimer: I'm rude and didn't read the previous comments so I apologize if this was already mentioned.Gary Johnson. No he won't win but if he 5% of the vote then the libertarian party can participate in the debate next election.

wool dread extensions

Dread Accessories

I ended up sewing them in. It seemed to be the least distructive, and I used colorful thread so I can just cut it out when I am done.

wool dread extensions

Dread Accessories

My mom gave me some raw (but cleaned) alpaca wool to use as dread extensions/colored tips since I don't want to dye my hair but want some length and color. The problem is I can't for the life of me figure out how to put the suckers in. I would like to have them be extensions/falls-whatever that is. That way they arepermanentenough and I don't have to take them in and out all the time. I somehow got one to stay by crocheting and palm rolling it in but for some reason that isn't working for any of the other ones I am trying to attach. I might just not know how to use a crochet hook properly, since this is the first time I have attempted to use one, but I watched a bunch of videos and I think I'm doing it right??

I couldn't find much on attaching wool though, so I'm wondering can you crochet wool directly to natural dreads? If not, why? and how would I attach them? I don't want to glue. I'm considering going to sally's and getting those clamp things but I don't know if they will be big enough and it might look really weird since its on the ends of dreads instead of the root of normal hair..

in short (after that long rant) help!! I want pretty torquise extensions and wool dyes well (plus I already have it)

Hair dreading too close to the scalp

Dread Maintenance

hmmm... its mostly the small ones on the top of my head that I am having this issue with. My only guess is that it is because I roll around a lot in my sleep its kind of the same as root rubbing??? I'm not too sure.

My hair has always matted at the root really well too. Before I dreaded I would wake up in the morning with a big matt on the sides of my heads.

Hair dreading too close to the scalp

Dread Maintenance

hmmm... It seems to be mostly my small dreads on the top of my head that I have that issue with. The only thing I can think of is that I roll around a lot in my sleep and that kind of makes it seem like I root rub because I'm moving around so much?

Hair dreading too close to the scalp

Dread Maintenance

I started tnr with about 1 inch sections. not sure what they are not since they kind of did their own thing and I have more of a variation on size than what i started with. I guess ranging from 2 inches to a quarter inch, probably.

Hair dreading too close to the scalp

Dread Maintenance

I always heard that hair naturally will dread about 1 inch to 1/4 inch to the scalp... usually there is enough room to like stick your finger in through the root before the dread starts. In some places on my scalp this is the case but in others, especially on the top of my head this is not. In some places my dreads come all the way up to the scalp to the point that it can't even move around a lot without feeling like its being pulled. Should I do more of a conditioning treatment? Right now all I do is wash with dr. b's and do an bs acv rinse once a month. I don't root rub, or do any other type ofmaintenance. A few months ago I had my strays tucked in by a friend but I don't think she did anything to the parts that I am mentioning since I've had this issue since month 4 and atm I am 11 months dreading :)

any help would be appreciated.
