Dreadlock Discrimination.

General Talk

i thought it was just kind of fun because when i had seen and known anything about dreadlocks before dreadding my own hair. my first thought or even any thought had anything to do with black people.i was like, what? i thought it was funny and then realized, oh yeah i guess i sort of understand?

but at the same time i didn't lol because i was thinking, where did you really get that skewed perseption of hair?

@SEYes! Yes! Yes! Ever since I was very young Ive always been different. So being in such a red state I should be used to it by now ;) But bleh!

@des/shanlove my hair, and I believe Iam taking better care of it now than I ever was as well. i'm just gonna keep my head up high and just be me :)

Dreadlock Discrimination.

General Talk

I'm not sure if anyone has posted something to this sort of title but I thought I would ask the public on the subject.

Ever since I have started my amazing dread process. Ive noticed that I'm facing discrimination almost more so than usual. Maybe its because I have baby dreads, and they aren't fully mature and awesome looking to the public eye. I do live in a "red state" and I face it day to day being a woman, lesbian, and just going to the own beat of my drum ;)

I guess I just wonder, how do you guys face it when people (cashiers, waitresses, bank tellers, class-mates, family members) treat you differently because of how your hair is? I'm not sure if its some pre-judgemented conceptionalized notion where its acceptable to treat me with less respect or even be rude.

I do try to live my life as peaceful as I can as we all do I"m sure :)

I think some feedback would really help my situation and maybe looking at it from a different view.

PS: When my mother found out about my hair her exact words were

"Are you trying to be black? Do you want people to think POT HEAD when they look at you because now they do!" (I giggled inside :p )

Introduce Yourself

Hello my name is Tess!

I live in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I'm 25 years old, and I'm a graphic design student. I love art and learning from everything and everyone. One day my girlfriend and I started talking how awesome dreadlocks were and how they were so beautiful and we wished we could have them.
Then I'm... well why not? Its just hair. And Ive done about almost every color and every cut (maybe :P)
And then it begun and I started my dreadding process- I'm only 8 weeks old i think. :D

Methods:
I first started backcombing the HELL out of them. Like. I read everywhere "don't back comb more than the first day or so." Well I was so obsessed with them looking perfect I did it almost every day for like a week if not more. I also palm rolled the crap out of them as well.
I was very harsh on my hair. :/
I originally had bleach blonde hair.. and decided I want to be as natural as possible so I stopped doing everything to my hair and dyed it my natural hair color:dark/ash blonde.
I probably would not recommend you dying your hair in the beggining process at all. My locks significantly shrunk. Due to compacting or what have you. They used to be fat, and I miss them! But all is not lost. I have learned to really love and appreciate my hair for what it is. :)

Which is why I now do nothing to it. I don't even palm roll it!~ I can't believe it actually.

Cleaning:
At the very start I was using Paul Mitchells Tea Tree Shampoo. Alright nay sayers bring it on. I know I know shampoo=baddd. But it smell so good. I was hooked. So I used that for like 2 weeks? Maybe it hindered my dreadding process, still not sure. Then I started just soaking my head in a giant pot of hott water and teatree oil. Orgasmic? HELLO! Amazing tingling feeling all over your head :) MMM
After a few weeks I conjoured up a recipe that really helps! And I can't wait to make up new ones.......
baking soda+tea tree oil+warm water+dr. bronners peppermint liquid soap=normal wash
raw apple cider vinegar+tea tree oil+warm water=itchy scalp/dandruff soak

So far Ive been loving my precious unique locks. And can't wait to continue on in my spiritual/emotional/mental/physical/etc dreadlock journey <3

Itch, residue

Dread Maintenance

i have a problem with an itchy scalp. here what my remedy-

empty bottle+few drops of tea tree oil+ few cups of warm water+ 1 tablespoon raw apple cider vinegar

let it soak on your head for a few minutes. the vinegar it eats the dandruff, and helps the itch.

sometimes tea tree oil can be a little harsh and dry out your head and make it sensitive. but if you only use a few drops and mix it with the apple cider vinegar and warm water. i think the apple cider vinegar works wonders. im also a sufferer of itchy scalp:) hope this helps!! :)
