Growing my roots, a personal and spiritual journey.

Member Journals and Timelines

I'm sort-of back at it after combing my hair, I gave it a lot more thought and realised I don't really want to cut my hair in any way anyway, so now I'm back to letting it do whatever. I've been messing up my hair on purpose, usually with a towel, some mild twist and rip here and there, just because I felt like it, I'm a very playful person anyway and I love how my messy hair now actually represents me better :)

pics come some day.

The palm rolling didn't do much, I thought maybe it would help to push more hairs together but the next morning everything was gone haha.

FemalePheromones:

From what I understand palm rolling does nothing except for weakening the roots. It might flatten some frizzy hairs down for a while but they will soon pop back up.

I was in a similar position to you after I combed out my crocheted "dreads" I tried free form for 6 months and my hair was kind of sectioning but not locking up at all. I then saw photos of @bazooka_guru 's twist and rip dreads and thought they looked awesome so fuck it let's give it a go. Like I say I used the sections that were already kind of forming so they were all kind of random sizes and not in any sort of grid pattern that a lot of people seem to go for so they actually seem a bit more natural anyway. Also make sure you buy this shampoo:

From the first time I used that shampoo on my hair after doing twist and rip things started to happen. It really makes all the difference.

Thanks, but... I've been using Vicki's shampoo for months already, remember? :P I wash my hair about 3 times a week. I'm actually considering goin back to washing my hair with plain water and/or tea, that has always worked for me (did that for years).

I have been playing with my hair, messing it up and such, it seems to have created a few more tangles and things that might help to speed things up a bit.

I'll probably just keep going, in the spirit of my original idea of not caring about what my hair looks like. Maybe I'll buy a fun hat instead ;)

FemalePheromones: If you're going to brush your hair out anyway you may as well give twist and rip a go. Worse comes to worse you could then just brush them out like you were going to do anyway.

I was already considering this, thanks :) I'm also wondering if palm rolling might be something, without wax of course. It's kind of similar to twist and rip.

Tater:

I second that.

Mine took to twist and rip really well. I'm almost to 3 months, will add an update here soon...but they're basically dreaded. I have finger-length dreadies all over.

That's cool :) I wonder how my hair would do with twist and rip though because I already haven't brushed my hair for so long now, I'm wondering if it could even work at this point. That's why I'm thinking palm rolling, just pushing all the hairs together, I have a lot of free time so I can sit around every day rolling my hair around, maybe use some coconut oil or jojoba oil, just a little bit.

Guess what? I forgot to take pictures again :)

Also, I'm considering brushing my hair and doing something completely different with it. Part of the reason is because I'm a little impatient and other than one knotty tangle, my hair is showing no sign of locking at all. I'm willing to bet that I could brush it and in less than an hour it would be as if I never even tried to freeform. While I do have spiritual reasons for growing my hair and such, I also don't hold hair (very) sacred and I want to enjoy and have fun with the way I look. So I might try different hairstyles for a while and come back to trying locks later.

I will post a picture before I decide anything, though. I'm not in a rush :)

How much time do you spend separating your dreads?

Dread Maintenance

Oh you seem to have misunderstood. I have no need for separating because nothing is sticking together yet. There's plenty of tangles, I often hurt myself on accident when my fingers get stuck when I'm getting dressed or something, but for the most part it seems to all be quite separate still. So there's not one mass, not at all :P In fact, people don't seem to believe me when I tell them I haven't brushed my hair in over 4 months.

Okay! So I'm going out on a little adventure tomorrow, I'm making it a goal to get some pics of my hair this time :)

I've been worried that my hair isn't locking well, as I talk about here; https://www.dreadlockssite.com/dreadlocks-forums/forum/dread-maintenance/119210/how-much-time-do-you-spend-separating-your-dreads#r119257

But I still like to stick with my original idea of letting my Jaata roots grow and not care about it because I've spend too much time worrying about how I look and it's quite silly really. But like 99% of everyone else here, I'm very keen on seeing some real locks forming in my hair.

Was that question for me, @peaceful-passer ? If it was; no, I don't condition my hair. I just wash it with Vicki's shampoo every few days and sometimes I take a bath or go swimming. I'm often very active and don't usually tie my hair so when I'm outside it flies all over the place :D I figure it's separating naturally this way. But I'll admit to being a bit impatient to see 'results' of some kind.

Dread Maintenance

I'm starting to worry since I haven't had to separate at all :D maybe my hair is too soft or something, I was having a conversation with someone and told them I hadn't brushed my hair in 4 months, they were surprised because my hair looks very 'normal' but when they don't brush for just one day their hair is a mess.

It's not that I'm bothered by it or anythin, but I do wonder, will I ever form locks in my hair?

Yeah they look way heavy. There's a reggae artist called 'Jah Sun' who, I think, cut his locks not too long ago because they kept him from swimming with his kids or something. That's not really a problem when you live somewhere warm, though. I don't think so, anyway.

So, of course, I don't have any pictures yet because I always forget to bring my camera when I go outside and I don't want to make any pictures inside. But I'll try and get some soon :D ......... that's not a promise XD

I have one very knotty tangle, but most of my hair just kind of clings together, I still have to make some proper pictures (I keep forgetting!) which might help explain. It's probably going to take a long time for my hair to lock together, but I'm okay with that. I think this might mean I will end up with a lot of skinny locks, which I'd be very happy with, but who knows :D

I hope you didn't hurt yourself, Tater, maybe consider keeping a bigger one, once your hair grows and grows longer, there will be more. I look at Alborosie for example, look him up, he has a few really thick locks and it looks great =) Like, those locks are thicker than my lower arms XD
