Hair won't dread

Introduce Yourself

Like Soaring Eagle said, you didn't mention a lot.
There could be many reasons why you didnt get a single tangle, I'll just mention the more common do nots.

  • Dont run fingers through hair, still considered combing
  • Use residue free shampoo
  • Be gentle when drying hair, just pat the towel on your hair and let the rest air dry
  • Don't let your hair get oily ( dont use conditioner )
  • Try and have your hair in a ponytail, hat, or tight beany for as little as possible
  • Read the dreaducation page on this website.

For lots of things, it's also about what you don't do in combination with what you do right. So please try again, and if you dont see progress, dont be discouraged. I didnt start seeing progress until around 4 or 5 months when knots started popping up all over. Peace and hope you have a wonderful dready journey

I have begun my Journey :)

Dreading Methods

Sorry to kinda hijack this thread but I also have the same problem and im 6 months in. I can now go 2 days without washing and I been trying to get my scalp used to 3 days for the past 2 or 3 weeks and no change. I was just wondering if i should keep pushing or stick with 2 days? I feel like im loosing a lot of progress, especially in the areas that were barely knotted. PS the super oiliness is also caused by my really thin hair, I guess there is less hair to soak up all my oils

Oh and you could try using the famous dreadlocks shampoo most of the people on this site use and support. The tea tree bar helps a lot.

question about section shape at roots.

Dread Maintenance

I think I understand what you mean. I had a dread like that too which was too well formed to split in half, so i just pulled out the hairs from the dread that gave it more tension. I was also careful not to rip my hair. So far its good, although really flat but it should fix itself. If they arent too well formed you could just split it in half like you said, or leave it alone but take care of the tension causing hairs.

New need help going natural

Dread Maintenance

Oh and if you have hard water, you can either use bottled water to mix with the baking soda, or you can boil the amount of water you need, then let it sit for an hour or two. if you have really hard water like i do, you can see all the minerals on the bottom of the water. next you just pour the water into another container really slowly and steadily and make sure to leave the last 10% or so of water because thats where all the minerals causing the water to be hard is.
If your not sure, just google hard water map for your area

New need help going natural

Dread Maintenance

Exactly what Nicole said. For the bs + acv wash instructions:
First you gotta make sure whether or not you have hard water, if you have soft water then its as simple as:

Mix the bs and water together. The ratio is 1 cup of baking soda to 10 cups of water.
Next you gotta rinse your hair with normal water
After that, you pour the bs and water solution on your head and hair. You let it soak from 10-30min depending on how dirty your scalp is. but dont go over 30 min.
Rinse off and make sure to get all the baking soda off.
Next you pour apple cider vinager mixed with water ( its a cap or two of vinegar in 5 cups of water ) over your head. Most people can rinse off right away, especially if your scalp is naturally oily. But people with dryer hair need to let it soak longer, but never go over 1min.
Finally, you finish off with a cold water rinse, the coldest you can handle.
Good luck with your dreads and hope it all goes well :)

thicker dreads

Dreading Methods

Im no expert at all, still 3 months in on my natural dread journey but I dont think putting in string or honey lemon is exactly healthy for your dreads. If you want thicker dreads, your going to have to let them congo together. If they arent congoing maybe you could try using a wrap to bundle 2 or 3 dreads together to encourage them to congo. Im not completely sure though, if im wrong please feel free to correct me.

Guitar Learner

Introduce Yourself

I agree with Ojas. I am another self taught guitarist and I have friends that were taught. It felt like they would accomplish 3 months of progress in just one month with a teacher. If you can't get a teacher for any reason, I would suggest youtube. Just youtube tutorials to get the basics down or go to friends who play guitar to give you a quick lesson or two. :] Good luck in learning and hope you'll be a pro one day :)

Bleeding Scalp

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

Yeah I suppose I might try dreadlockshampoo. Would the liquid or bar one be better for someone barely a month in? In the mean time, would it be good to do a nice acv rinse tomorrow, and while its shipping, use less bs and start using acv? Thanks again man

soaring eagle said:

start using acv the bs no acv is only meant o be temporary

its 4 am too titred to figure out if the bs ratio is right but its close bs without acv will fry your scalp

in fact id switch to www.dreadlockshampoo.com for a bit

or at least start to reintroduce acv

usualy you stop getting so oily in a few weeks and can use acv within 3 weeks to a month

but i would probly give the dreadlockshampoo a go and lay off bs awhile if the readings not goig will u can tey the bs again after a few weeks recovery with acv tho

Bleeding Scalp

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

Hello all. I have been dreading for about a month now. Im really loving the journey, the messyness, the little maintenence it needs. Only problem is that my scalp has two small sections that itch and when I scratch it, it starts bleeding. I use 1/3 cup of bs to about 3 1/2 cups of water and leave it on for about 15min. I rinse it off and finish my shower by rinsing my hair and scalp in cold water. I dont use ACV since my hair and scalp gets oily really fast. Before I started dreading, I remember every morning when I would wake up, my hair would be crazy oily to the point where I wont leave my house without taking a shower. I also have a feeling that my scalp gets oily fast too because I dont get dandruff but when I do scratch my scalp with my fingernail, this whitish/ yellowish dandruffish thing is on my fingernail. It might be sebum maybe? Im contemplating on whether or not I should stop this journey or not. Any help is grately appreciated. :]

Starting natural dreads while on a swim team

Dreading Methods

Do you think if I did this before practice and rinsed my hair after practice that ill be able to do the bs and acv wash sometime on the weekend and be able to swim monday?

Another bit of advice is to soak your hair with tap water before going into a chlorinated pool. The tap water will soak into the hair and keep it from absorbing a lot of the chlorine.
