Locs: Back of the head

Dread Maintenance

I've been growing my locs naturally for 3 weeks. My locs in the front are tighter because I gently roll my hair through out the day just shaping them in these beginning stages. I rarely touch my locs in the back and they're becoming pretty loose. I don't want to get my hair "re-twisted" or w/e as I like the natural look, but I would like them to tighten up a bit in the back. Will washing my hair more cause them to tighten more in the back? I shower daily but have only washed my hair once since I started the locking process 3 weeks ago.

Rubber Bands

Dread Maintenance

What are some of the draw backs to using rubber bands in the beginning of the locking process? I dont have any rubber bands in now, but I've been thinking about using something to help tame some wild locs...any other suggestions besides rubber bands and obviously time? Thank you!!

thick or thin dreads for blonde hair

Dreading Methods

DUDE YOU GUYS MAKING RACIALIZED GENERALIZATIONS SOUND VERY IGNORANT. To generalize and say that all or even most black people have salon dreads is one of the most backwards statements i've heard on this forum. For starters it is completely based on a single persons personal perception of what they see in the media or in their daily life and is not an accurate representation of reality. Secondly anyone who has ever frequented any of the many Caribbeanislands (just as an example off the top of my head) personally knows how incorrect it is to speculate that most people of african descent have "salon dreads". Thirdly your being half this or half that does not justify making comments that too many are offensive. It is everyone 's right to be as offensive as he or she wants to be, but to choose to do so has its consequences. Me personally I try and respect other people's differences because the discipline of reading into other human's sensibilities, whom we share this earth with, makes one a better person at the end of the day than the selfish man who fails to think how his actions or words affect the world around him; and ultimately himself in a negative way.

Nah they're not really ignorant statements. Surely there are some exceptions, but for the most part what I see are salon dreads. And I know their hair grows differently. And that difference would be that it locks easier because of teh texture. I would know: i'm half African. It's cool though. Evereyone has to be PC these days. Whats the fun in speaking an opinion that doesn't placate everyone?

brown dreads...

General Questions

The older hair that forms around the dreads gets lighter naturally because it looses pigment faster than hair that is attached to the scalp due to having less nutrients in it. I'm black and only had dreads for a month and my hair is quickly turning red and really light brown. My cousins (also black) who have had dreads for a few years all have blonde dreads. It just depends on your individual genes and and how your hair codes for bleaching, plus sun exposure accelerates this effect. The existence of more old hair in locs than most hairstyles is what makes locs in particular more prone to being brown, red, light brown, blonde etc.
