dreadlocks driving me insane

About six months ago, maybe longer, I posted a topic about combing out my dreads. I think almost every single response was negative and stated it was impossible because my dreads were too tight, i didn't wash my hair enough and because i crocheted them a bit.

Before:

After:

I had 27 dreads. I had crocheted them, not washed them and pretty much did not take too much care of them except for when I was crocheting them together. They were in for about a year and were locked pretty well.

It took a little over a month of strict determination and a pick comb.
I grabbed some apple cider vinegar and washed it everyday for about two weeks prior to beginning the process. Also used coco butter as a natural conditioner. It was surprisingly easier to comb out with dry hair. Some dreads took nine hours, others took as little as forty five minutes.

Yes, I miss them but my neck feels so much better. I may do it again just because I now know that I can comb them out, who knows. I ended up inspiring a friend to comb hers out, she had them in for three years. She was also successful.

When I got a haircut the stylist was surprised at how healthy my hair turned out to be after so much wear n' tear.

It can be done. I was thinking the entire time, "what takes longer, waiting for your hair to grow out or combing these damn things out?!"

I hope this is not the discussion in which you though almost every single response was negative. Because if so, I would have to disagree with you. Hope your journey is blessed. Peace & love,Mia

I am glad that you feel better now :) I am never gonna comb mine out but, I have a couple of questions out of curiosity. In the original one, you had only washed your hair about 6 times in 6 months and you had been crocheting. Did you continue maintaining that way up until you combed them out? You said your hair had been really long when you started your dreads. Did you loose any length? How much hair did the stylist cut off?

Why in the second photo I can still see some dreads at the back? You didn't comb out all, only front?

I didn't lose any length, but the ends were in a need of a trim. I hadn't gotten a hair cut two years prior to dreading, so I needed a trim way before that. The stylist cut off about six/seven inches and my hair was just passed my mid back after the cut.. So, I was still able to keep length.

Once I made the decision to de-dread, which was about two/three months prior to the beginning of the process, i started shampooing and conditioning on the reg.

And @Mia I disagree with your statement.

What in particular did you find negative? Perhaps you misinterpreted what others were trying to say. I believe they were all stating their opinions and many were very encouraging commenting things like, ".i definitely see where you're coming from with wanting to cut them, especially for a job." and "I hope everything works out for you and you are happy with whatever your decision is. Many Blessings."Peace & love,Mia
