What is a Hippie?

This is a topic that always gets to me.Everywhere you go there are groups of people who call themselves "hippies" and sell "hippie clothes" and embody "hippie" characteristics. But who even knows what hippie is?The REAL "hippies" never called themselves hippies. In fact they were rebelling against the very idea of that kind of labeling and grouping. They were all different in so many ways, and it was in their great diversity that gave them their strength and resolve. The one thing that had in common was that they were fed up with the establishment and they wanted to do their own thing. Communal anarchy was the name of the game and they set out to reclaim our natural freedom. In a brilliant attempt to stifle this growing movement, the government/media began the "hippie" movement. They started using the manufactured entity of the "hippie" to group all of these diverse minds into one simple label. They used this label to turn any meaningful demonstration into garden variety "hippie" folly. Then the masses of kids fell right into the trap and began to unknowingly propogate the medias version of what a hippie is. This is what weakened the movement as a whole. The media was able to turn mainstream society against a singular entity in order to make it easier to degrade anything that was done to change the flow of government. Any valid demonstration by any counterculture organization was turned into a joke by simply saying "oh what are those silly hippies up to now".When the real players in the movement got privy to this catastrophe, they held the funeral for hippidom in San Francisco. People like the weathermen, the pranksters, Leary, and even Garcia and Co. held the funeral to make a statement to the people. Unfortunately it seemed to be too late. Too many folks had gotten attached to this idea. It allowed people to avoid the responsibility of finiding their induividuality, but at the same time conform to a labeled group that was a supposed "counterculture".If we avoided mass labels like this and simply referred to people by their individual principles and characteristics we could become a stronger movement with more diversity. We are all one this is true. However, the infinite diversity of the one is natural beauty. Love binds each part of the one. More diversity = More Love.Love is real power. This goes for any group who gets labeled. Free yourself of labels and find what makes you, you. What do you think of this? Do you think there is any good use for arbitrary labels in society?

I guess one could say that a "hippie" is someone who is doing their own thing apart from society. But that is still a label and only indicates a problem with society. If we highlight the posotive aspect of each persons principles instaed of describing them by what they DON'T do I think it would inevitably create more momentum for collective evolution. If we keep talking about what we dont want to be like, we will end up standing still.

i dunokinda completely disagree in a way hahahai feel like 'hippie' is such a demeaning word and i believe it stemmed from the word 'hippster'and to me a hippster is jus another person who is tryin to fit into an already established 'counter-culture' wutever the fugg those are hahahhai duno what else i can say about this other than i feel that the 60's just produced this new kind of label of people- "Hippies" which has gotten to the point of being a definite derragatorry term, or atleast thats how it is usally used..i feel that labels r wrong and y should sum1 call me a hippiie when i probably differ with them on even the most simple of political issues blah blahblhaEVENTHOUGH the 60's produced this new sect of people who think theyre so trendy i think alot of the original propagators of this movement were sincere, revoltuionary, and brilliant.however the mass of the Haight-ashbury district were most likely abunch of wierdo homeless junkies tryn to party all night and everyday (ive kidna read a good amount about how it was during the summer of love and what not and i dont think it would have been as glamourous as the legend has become, id rather be back in the 17th or 18th century, NOW that wuld be some real fun!hahah)if sum1 calls me a hippie i take offense...but thats just me hahhaha
