I had dreads once before, way back when i was in middle school i dreaded my mohawk, but since i was totally naive and misinformed, me and my friend created them with backcombing and wax, not to well done. Long story short, only had em for like 6 months. Since then I've been wanting to get a full head of dreads, just decided that this would be the year i start...8 years later. My hair is just a little over an inch now but you gotta start somewhere, right? Natural is my preferred and chosen method, my hair grows straight and thick, so my question is at what length would you guys recommend i start the process? Thanks a lot, and this website has been unbelievably helpful.

I was going to stay away from backcombing, wanted to go completely natural. So i guess ill just grow it out, and leave it alone for the most part, hopefully it wont get to messy as it grows. But thank you for your responses!

Either wait for it to grow to start dreading, or start now and you will dread while it grows :D

oh and one more question, once my hair gets long enough i was planning on holding most of it back with a bandana or something, that wont hamper any dread growth or development will it? Of course I wouldn't be sleeping with it on.

I'm 2 weeks into it, and just LOVE this site. It makes up for the lack of vision that I feel when people say "WHAT did you do to your hair"? My reply is that I got a puppy. See I look at dreadding like a new puppy. For the first +/-6-8 months of their life, they are pretty annoying, and never act like we'd like them to....after that comes years of pride and enjoyment, an awesome conversation piece and if they are really cool, might even get you a "date"!! once you start, don't give up, my dreadhead friend. It's worth the commitment. Woof....
