Welcome. But crocheting is actually MUCH worse than wax. Wax can be scrubbed out over time with a good detergent. All crocheting does is rips your hair to shreds. It does nothing to help your locks tighten. In fact because, with every pass of the hook, it rips your hair up so much, it actually weakens your locks considerably. There have been many accounts of locks snapping off in places and even snapping off at the root because of crocheting.
What it does is over tightens your locks, too. This makes your hair stiff and hard. The most mature locks should never been hard. They are spongy and soft.
If you only crocheted once to start, that's not as bad. It will take about 6 months for them to recover, but they will. If you crochet over a long period of time, they can get to a point where they can't recover.
Locks will ALWAYS be messy at first. That's a fact of life for dreadlocks. They do tidy themselves up in due course. You just have to be patient.

Welcome Taylor, I bet your hair is happy that it now has your permission to dread. Embrace the freedom of no more arguments with your hair.
