Welcome to the community Becky..You certainly came to the right site to learn all about the TRUE facts to grow healthy and happy dreadlocks that can last you a lifetime. Do all you research first...While you are reading up on it, you can start your journey...As mentioned, the neglect / free form method is the best, then the twist & rip method is next. The back combing method does cause some damage to the hair, as it is pushed up towards the scalp, like extreme teasing of the hair. Oh, as I was saying, you can start now, all you need to do is stop brushing your hair and washing it 2-3 times a week with a dread friendly shampoo or the baking soda wash/apple cider vinegar rinse. No matter what method you choose, let your hair separate into sections naturally first, that way your future dreads tell you where they want to be. This will take about a couple of weeks to happen, so while you are waiting, you can read up and get all the info you need, then make your decision how to start. I did the T&R method and made a posting to help out new members who choose to go this way, many tips on there even for the neglect method. http://www.dreadlockssite.com/forum/topics/just-starting-out-what-to-expect?xg_source=activity

Here is a map so you can see what water type you have....peace

Welcome. Look into the timeline forums, too. See what the first few weeks/months will look like. Dreadlocks take about 1 full year, on average, to mature

Welcome to the community cynthia and to the best site on the web for all your healthy dread information to get you off to a good start. I started my journey by letting my hair section naturally first for a couple of weeks and then used those sections for my T&R. That way my hair told me where it wanted to have dreads. Here are some good tips I posted that I learned for T&R.....enjoy the site...Peace

A map so you can see what your water type is. The shampoos & bars that are best for you depend on your water, we can help you if you need it..

Welcome. You never have to use any products. The reason most people end up doing it after they tried not to is that they get discouraged. When we tell you that it takes a while to grow mature locks, we don't mean a few weeks, or a few months, It takes about 1-2 full years to grow fully matured locks.

It that time, you will see your hair tangle and untangle. Over and over again. The 4th month tends to be the messiest for most people.

Locks generally go through 3 major stages. First, you'll see your hair start to shrink. During this stage, you lose between 1/3 - 1/2 your original length. There's nothing you can do to stop it. Shrinkage means they are locking. No shrinkage means no knots are forming. This phase lasts between about 5-10 months.

The second major phase is when they stop shrinking, but seem to not grow at all. During this phase, your roots will begin to tighten. That's why they don't seem to grow at all.

And finally, they will explode with growth.

Be prepared to have some straight hair at the tips and roots. Baby locks have between 1-3 inches of straight hair there.
