It's good you don't use it regularly, but even once in a while is doing tons of harm. Every time a loop pops out, that is because of crocheting. Crocheting rips your hair up. So you have more and more ends to pop out, instead of only 1 end for each hair in the lock.
Say there are about 500 hairs in a thinner lock. That's 500 tips that could pop out. Most will will just be sucke dinto your lock and disappear. If you crochet, and manage to only rip 200 of hose hairs in half (which is unlikely, you'd probably rip 200 hairs into 5 pieces. But for easy math, let's say in half). Now you have 300 tips+200x3 tips That's 900 tips that will pop out. You crochet again and rip the other 300 in half. Now you have 300x3 tips+ 600 tips. That's 1500 tips that can pop out. It grows exponentially. Every time you crochet to "fix" the hairs that pop out, you are creating more and more hairs that will be frizzy and make you feel that you need to fix them.
If this is hard to conceptualize, grab a piece of string. Imagine that 1 end is attached to your scalp and the other is the tip of your hair. Cut the string in half. 1 one end is still attached to your scalp. Now you have the tip of that one, plus the 2 tips of the piece that was cut off. If you cut that second piece in half, you no have 2 tips for each of those pieces, as well and the original tip. With only 2 passes of a crochet hook,you now have 5 times as many tips that can pop out as you did before you ever crocheted.
Thanks, all of you. I don't crochet my dreads any more, they were put in with the hook and only two maintenance jobs on them. I only take the hook out now when a loop pops out after washing. I don't use any waxes or gels, just different shampoos.

But in the process, every pass of the hook rips hairs into smaller and smaller pieces. This will severely weaken your locks. It's very common for locks to snap in places and even at the root, just from crocheting over and over. It is also known to make your locks stiff and hard. The most mature locks should be soft and spongy.
And what products are you using? Hopefully not any wax or gels
