Bandana or Tam?

Dread Accessories

Thanks for the tips guys! I think I will try the bandana first and then see what feels most comfortable.

Heather--I know! I've been so busy with work that I have not been on recently. A couple months ago I did post an update thread on my progress though. You can watch the video here:

Bandana or Tam?

Dread Accessories

I just got hired at a Day Camp this summer and got out of wearing a camp baseball-style cap because I told them it would compress my hair too much. I'm gonna be outdoors most of the day and have the option of covering my head with a bandana so that I have my hair loose in the back or wearing a black wool tam that I own. What do you think would be the better option for 8 hours a day outdoors, during the summer, that will allow my hair to continue knotting up well and keep my comfortable. Bandana covering my head with my hair loose in the back or Black wool tam?

Natural/Neglect/Freeform Dreadlocks @ 1 Year and 2 Months

Member Journals and Timelines

Hey Everyone!

I haven't posted frequently for close to a 8 months because I wanted to just let my hair be. Here is a video of my progression at 1 Year and 2 Months of just washing with a Baking Soda, Sea Salt, Essential Oil wash and a Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse.

Natural, Neglect, Freeform Dreadlocks @ 1 Year and 2 Months!

I do not cover my hair ever (although will have to start this summer as I have to wear a hat at my job) and I've slept on a wool sweater that I have over my pillow. :-) Thanks SE, this site, and all the users for your contributions! :-) -Marcus

Dreadlocks Shampoo

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

It's great to see that you've found a product that works so well for you! :-) Since Coconut Oil is very conditioning though, and advised against prior to this product when forming locks from the natural or neglect method, what makes it different? Won't it slow or halt the locking process as compared to the BS/Sea Salt/ACV wash? We've been warned against coconut oil before this product came out! Lol

Dreadlocks Shampoo

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

What's the deal with this dreadlocks shampoo the site is touting. I've been on the neglect journey for a little over a year already and this is my first post in a REALLY long time. Last time I checked a shampoo that contained coconut oil was not recommended for new, total neglect or natural style dread formation because it is too moisturizing. So what's the deal? I'm looking to switch up shampoo every once in a while since I've been doing straight BS and Sea Salt washes with ACV rinses for a year now. I am actually going to post a video tomorrow so you all can see my progress. This site is amazing and I'm sad I've been away from it for so long but I've been trying to just let my hair be. <3

my first comment and it wasn't nice:(

General Talk

Heather, that sounds like a very unfortunate experience. I'm only 6 months into neglect and started with about 4 inches of hair so I don't have anything that remotely looks locks now but I've told many people that I'm aiming for locks the "natural" way. After getting many comments about how they are dirty, I'm doing it wrong, blah blah blah, I've decided to just tell people that all I do is wash my hair. When people ask me what I've done to my hair I say: I just wash it. It seems to have stopped all the comments! :-) -Marcus

I wash 2x a week (on Sunday & Wednesday) with the Baking Soda and Sea Salt Mixture. I add 8 teaspoons of Baking Soda and 4 teaspoons of Sea Salt to 8 cups of HOT water and then add 2 capfuls of ACV to 1 Liter of Cold Water. I rinse my hair, pour on the BS mixture, let it sit for 10 minutes, then rinse well, and pour on the ACV mixture and rinse out as soon as I'm done pouring it.

I've also sleep on wool every night. My hair is probably about 6 inches right now.

7 Month Hair Shots

A couple of days ago I reached the 7 Month Neglect Mark and I'm so excited! Even though my hair has not locked yet there are plenty of changes every day. I have never been complimented on my hair as much as I am now. I've been washing with BS and ACV for the entire time now and have eliminated any "white mud" scalp issues with using VERY hot water and by moving to a home that filters and softens their water. My hair has grown out substantially lighter than I thought it would be considering I have almost black hair. I wonder if my washing regimen had anything to do with that. I can't complain though, I love the color! My hair is not anything near being locked yet but I am excited to see some changes. I wonder what will come next :-) <3 -Marcus

Washing Question

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

So on Sunday I washed my hair with just BS and skipped the ACV. While I was waiting the 10 minutes my scalp felt like it started to burn a little and a rinsed it off at about 8 min. When my hair dried hours later, I noticed it was DRIER THAN EVER. My hair has never felt so dry before. It's now Tuesday morning and I have an awards ceremony to go to later. I don't want to be scratching my scalp later and usually wash on Wednesday morning so I think I will wash today. My question is, I have the Maylee's Nag Champa shampoo bar and I have the Knotty Boy Dreadlock Shampoo Bar. I've never used anything with oils in it because I've been doing BS/ACV and can't afford essential oils but I would really like to get some oils in my hair since this happened. Which bar should I use? The Maylee's or the Knotty Boy? Will they remove the little knotting and separation I have for only 2 1/2 months into neglect? -Marcus
