Smelly hair

General Questions

Yeah, the 'no touch' method didn't work for me either. I always suggest rubbing around on the scalp to people. You put the right stuff on your scalp, let it soften it up, and then scrub around in there and you've got three things going to happen:

1) You just plain FEEL better taking care of those itchies.

2) You get clean.

3) You're actually helping the knotting process along.

Just wait until a few months pass, Kubilay, you'll come back to the boards bitching about how much separating you have to do every time you shampoo. hahahah! But it's fun. It's part of the process. Personally, I let mine go and only separate every other shampoo that way I know I'm getting good progress, but everyone's a little different. Trust your instincts, always.

Smelly hair

General Questions

And which EO's? Certain ones can get rid of funk better than others. Lemon, for example.

Your scalp is going to take a while to acclimate to the new norm for washing your hair. Some newbies hair freak out with dandruff, others with oil, and others with extreme funk. Some people don't have any problems at all. It does require patience.

Smelly hair

General Questions

I went through that stage, too. I highly recommend putting up to three drops of an EO(essential oil) in your baking soda water. It's the only way I could get through it. EO's are amazing. Lavender, sage, basil, orange, you name it. You can use almost any EO. Just look up it's properties, first, to make sure it's skin worthy and safe. Basil will make your scalp tingle. That's when you know to rinse it really well. Use your fingertips on the scalp!!

www.mosalu.etsy.com has some great dready soaps. Natural EO's in them. Not too moisturizing but just enough once your locks get started really good that you can use Mosalu once a week or so to give yourself a break from the baking soda.

Introduce Yourself

Kelly! YES! Absolutely. Curly headed folks like us do seem to have an easier time looking well kept. I started my locks when my hair was just below my ears. Had no problems whatsoever. Check out my profile and pics. Now my hair is down past my shoulders. You'll have a blast with locking up, Kelly, if you have curls. All kinds of loopies and stuff. We even have a Crazies Dread thread where you can see some of the most bizarre ones out there. Lots of smiles and laughs.

Indulge in essential oils, too. I highly recommend putting up to three drops of an EO in your baking soda water. It's amazing. Lavender, sage, basil, orange, you name it. You can use almost any EO. Just look up it's properties, first, to make sure it's skin worthy and safe.

Introduce Yourself

First, throw out your comb. Then, look in the mirror and say, "I love myself no matter how crazy I might look the next year." Then laugh. Because honestly, if freedom is what you're looking for then that's exactly what you'll get if you learn the lessons that dreadlocks teach-- release. That lesson might come to you in odd ways, painful ways, socially awkward ways, and it might connect you with people you never thought you'd see yourself sharing time with.

If you're doing this for spiritual reasons, Nikki, then you've definitely found a welcoming community here. We happily welcome those who are trying to connect with humanity and the inner sacredness which is so difficult to see in our modern world today.

*hug*

Any advice is appreciated :)

Help! Save My Dreads

Kym, *smooches!* You said exactly what I feel about my dreads!

And Tanky, if you're gonna do the comb thing I highly advise you do it now before it gets going much more. My first set of locks were eight months along when I decided to comb them out and I cried like a baby for four hours straight. Or was it five. I can't remember. I just remember thinking, "I swear to God and all that is holy that once I get my next set those bitches aren't coming out. EVER!" I had a good reason at the time for brushing them out but I really wish I'd done it months sooner.

I've got a tender scalp, though.

When i've got my hair up you can't even tell I have locks. At all. Really. Seriously! So don't worry about the professional bit. You'll figure it out as you go just what styles look best.

Part In Hair

General Questions

I started out with a slight side part and... my locks had other ideas. It naturally just said, 'nope. Ain't gonna do it.' So I went with the flow and let it part itself down the middle like it wanted.

Now here's the fun part(pun intended). Once your locks get so far along, you can flip them around to give yourself whatever part you want! Seriously! ANYTHING you want, you can do it. It may not look terribly natural the first few(6-10) months but once you're around your first year dreadiversary you can do whatever you want with them. They're easy going.

Don't fret the small stuff because when your hair goes really crazy you're going to come back yelling about congo madness. :)
