Welcome. Most gels,especiallythe ones salons use will only help prevent locks from forming. They build up residue and can cause mold/mildew later down the line if you don't scrub it out and clean your hair VERY well.
I'm guessing you got yours done at a salon. Unfortunately, salons are notorious for destroying locks. They just aren't taught how to grow healthy locks in beauty school. It's not really their fault. Just a lack of knowledge. If you plan to keep your locks forever, I highly recommend NEVER getting them retwisted, and washing out the gel
