u dontroots need room to dread early on its notmal to have 1-3 inches undreaded at the roots thsat gets less and less as they mature by maturity its 1/2 an inch but will always be there and need to be there to dreadjust leave em alone do nothing to the roots at all just let them dreadand yea shoulder lengths plenty long ..just stop combing and they will dread without u doing anything to them

I totally understand! I never really liked brushing my hair either, and since my hair is suuper thick all over, it would begin to dread over just one night. I would get super crazy knots! But now I'm happy with my knots, and I'm sure you will be too!
