Hi Hannah, welcome to the community and to the best site on the web for all your healthy dread information. The dreaducation section at the top of the site is a great place to start for many tips. Below is a map so you can see what water type you have. With soft water, any dread shampoo or bar will work fine, but with hard water, most of those same ones do not work properly, the slowly leave behind a residue build up. For the best products around that work in all water types, wwwldreadlockshampoo.com, made by a member on this site..
Enjoy your journey....peace
