Welcome. Unfortunately, just using plain water isn't going to be enough to actually clean your hair. it will get some of the dirt and dust out of it. But inorder to do a real thorough cleaning, you'll want to use something else, like a soap or baking soda. BS is great if you have softer water. It is natural and you don't have to worry about scrubbing your scalp. Just mix 1/2 cup BS in with 5 cups of water. Mix it so it's fully dissolved and pour it on. Let this mixture sit for about 10-20 minutes. Then rinse it off really well. SInce BS is a base, it will have raised your scalp and hairs pH to a slightly unhealthy level. In order to balance this pH, mix 1 capful of apple cider vinegar in 5 cups of water. Pour this on and rinse it off right away. Now you're good to go. let your hair air dry as much as possible.

If you want to try a great natural soap, look into dreadlockshampoo.com. They are a small (local to me) business that only uses high quality, natural products (local if possible). This soap is designed to work in both hard and soft water

Welcome to the community Sarah, glad you joined us here on the best site for dreadlocks. Ditto on the ACV rinse...I did not always use it at first and I dried out, fried out my hair over time...it slowly happened and before you knew it...crap...took months to repair. The ACV is a fantastic dread softener...Hope you share a pic with us of your 6 month old dreads....peace

Welcome. Do you have naturally oily hair? If not, then are you doing and Apple Cider Vinegar rinse after you rinse out the BS?

BS is great for washing your hair. But it's also a base. So it wil raise your natural pH level to a level too high. This can and will make your hair too brittle, and your scalp too itchy if done alone for too long. By doing an ACV rinse, you bring your pH level back to normal, and keeps this from happening. It's easy. just mix 1 tsp ACV with 5 cups of water. Pour on your head, and rinse off right away
