Well, wax is a hydrocarbon, and won't all wash out in any amount of normal soap and water. It needs a detergent and about a month of scrubbing 2-3 times a week to make sure it's all out. I know it sounds excessive. But as it gets heated up in hot water, it doesn't really come out, it tends to just seep deeper into nooks deep inside the lock.

The palm rolling can be extremely damaging. If you don't do it much, it actually doesn't do anything at all. It does make them look a bit neater for a few hours. But nothing lasting. If you do it enough to see progress, it will severely destroy your roots. I did it for only 2 weeks (daily), and 6 years later I am still trying to fix the damage. It's a type of damage that doesn't show up for about a year. That's what's so terrible about it.

Yarn's not the best thing to wrap locks with. It tends to trap water and can actually cause mold to grow in your hair. Normally wool prevents mold, but when it traps water in, it can cause it. Hemp or embroidery thread is much better. But stay away from shiny hemp. They coat it with wax to get that look

Welcome. I guess I don't have to go into why not to crochet. Barrellady and Eagle already explained that. But just to let you know, they are absolutely right. Crocheting does nothing to help your locks mature, and only helps damage them and weaken them.

(Dobre dol) to the community Ognian, and to this wonderful, truthful site of dreading. If that is your profile pic, wow, you have great hair to start dreads with. Curly hair dreads naturally all on its own, you would be amazed to see that in one year you can have wicked natural dreads. The crochet hook and wax are two of the most damaging things you can do to dreads. The hook breaks hundreds of hairs every time it is used, eventually the locks will start breaking off your head. With patience you can grow your own dreads that can last you a lifetime, with you head of hair I highly recommend it. Here is a link about crochet hooks for dreads: Please read it before you make any decisions; http://www.dreadlockssite.com/page/crocheting-method-making

Here is a photo of the founder of this site, Soaring Eagle has had dreads for over 22 years, no hooks, no products...just love and cleanliness. You can do this to, but you have to stay away from hooks...Start off by reading the dreaducation section found near the top of the site, if you have any questions, we are all her to help you.....Peace.
