Just because you don't see the damage doesn't mean it's not there. Because of how tightly packed locks are, you can't see what is going on inside of them. What crocheting does is rips hairs into smaller and smaller pieces. There's no way to do it gently and not rip hairs. Just the way a crochet hook is shaped promotes damage.

It's got a hook on the tip. Pushing it in may not rip many hairs, but every time you pull it out, dozens of hairs rip. Maybe not every hair it comes in contact with, but enough that doing it over and over will cause enough hairs to rip over time that the tips of your locks aren't attached to your scalp. They are broken hairs attached to other broken hairs, attached to others and other and others until finally they are attached to broken hair that are coming out of your scalp.

There is no correct way to crochet. Some needles may not do as much damage as quickly as others, but all do the same type of damage. There's no way around it.

The fact is that crocheting is actually much worse than wax. Wax can be washed out. There is no way to make 2 strands of torn hair magically reattach themselves. It's permanent.

If you left those loops alone, they would eventually get matted down and tightened into the lock. There's no way to "remove" them without destroying your hair. Loops aren't forever. They are there during the forming period, but as your locks mature, they go away.

Welcome. Have you stopped crocheting them now? If so, great. Crocheting them will only cause problems.
