Once you have your twist & rip sections, you will probably have to pay more attention to them and keep the other hairs around them from joining in the dreading fun. As for washing, there is no way to keep them dry while washing the rest of your hair, anyways you want to keep them clean too. Locks must be clean in order to dread.
One way to keep them separated from the rest of the hairs is to wrap them with hemp or embroidery thread. Using a criss cross style will still allow the section to dread and move. If you don't like colorful wraps, then do them in the same color as your hair.
Regular shampoos may leave a residue build up inside the dread, so make sure you rinse them out really well to get it all out. When you use conditioner on the rest of your hair, it will affect the dreading process and most certainly leave a residue. Conditioners may cause your twisted sections to undo. Did you know that you can condition your hair with a capful or two of Apple Cider Vinegar? Do it after you shampoo, just mix the ACV with 5 cups of water & pour on your head, leave on for a minute at most. This conditioner is safe for dreads, no build up.
