When to wet and when to wash my baby dreads?

Dread Maintenance

My good friend worked on my hair for the first time on Saturday (11/10) to get my baby dreads started. She did some backcombing, some palm rolling, and some twisting and ripping, and crocheting, too. I was hoping for smaller sized dreads and ended up with 80-100 little dreadies on my head.

She told me to separate and lightly roll each dread several times a week, once a day would be great if possible. I have been doing that so far.

On Tuesday (11/13), I went to her house for a little more work. She did some more (light) back combing and palm rolling.

Each day my crazy hair mess had looked a little more dreadish, but I have no problem being patient for dreads to happen.

At this point, I have been showering with a shower cap to keep my hair dry, is this necessary? I shower daily. I understand I need to make sure my hair eventually dries. I work in a dog grooming salon, and from that I know that if you bathe a dog with matting (the start of doggy dreads) the mats tighten and are harder to brush out---- which is what I want on my head. So, should I let my dreads get wet in order to speed up the tightening process?

Also, my friend said I should wait at least a month before I wash my dreads. On here I have read about people only waiting a few days. Suggestions?

Thank you pretty people.

No dreads yet, seeking help in Portland, OR

Introduce Yourself

Hello beautiful people. I am ready to start my adventure in dreading.

From reading the discussions, I see that a lot of you are very into letting dreads form naturally, but I am hoping to go with the twist + rip method. I currently manage a business and feel like the neglect method would not be appreciated by my boss and clients, and if I can avoid the Side Show Bob look of just back combing, I would like that. Yes, I understand no matter the method, I am going to look unusual for a very long time, but after the reading I have done and people I have talked to, twist & rip seems like a good choice for me. My hair hits just below my shoulders and is loosely curled. Its not super thick, but there is a lot of it.

*****My problem is, I feel bad asking my poor friends (who have no experience making dreads) to help me with this. Are there any others in PORTLAND, OREGON who would be willing to spend a day with me and have experience with the twist & rip method? Of course I would compensate you in food/drinks/awesome conversation, etc, etc. If I could get a small group of Portlanders people together for a dread-my-head party, that would be a dream come true.******

If not, can anyone refer me to a local salon that dreads? I found a handful online and have read yelp reviews, but there is a lot of mixed information online, and I would love to hear from anyone who can actually vouch for a stylist. Also, from the salon sites I have found, it looks like most do crochet work.

Thank you in advance, pretty people.

Cassandra
