Positive Reactions?

General Talk

Hey, guys. Does anyone have some nice stories about positive reactions from friends or strangers towards your dreads? I've been reading a lot of posts about how people respond negatively to dreads. I have been lucky enough to start this process at a time when I am not working, and we're traveling with my husband's job, so I don't really have any social group to say "yay" or "nay" to the dreads right now while they're forming. I read others' stories about strangers or friends saying really mean things about their dreads or negative stereotypes, and I'm kind of bummed out and worried about confrontation when I do find myself around coworkers and social group again. I was wondering if people could share some stories about how people and strangers respond positively to your dreads in their early or late stages. Are people more kind after the dreads are looking more mature?

Crocheting your own Tam

Dread Accessories

I've been crocheting tams since I started dreads and liked it so much, all my family members are getting hats for Christmas. I just did google search for free crochet hat patterns and found a whole lot I liked. Also, pinterest had a ton - I don't know how that works, but I found a ton of crochet patterns I used through them.

Too Much Rosemary Oil?

Dread Maintenance

After a few washes with the BS+tea tree/ACV, it's really growing on me. What makes it extra nice now, is that I have been doing a final rinse with 7-10 drops of rosemary oil in 10 oz cold water. (I was having issues with dandruff.) It makes my hair feel so soft, and I haven't noticed dandruff since. I am wondering now, though, if using rosemary oil on 1.5 month dreads is too conditioning?

This one of my loop/zig-zags. I really looks like a zig-zag. The whole right side of my head is covered in them.

How often should a newbie wash hair?!

Dread Maintenance

My right side has been locking up faster than my left, but the left is catching up now, so don't worry too much. I wouldn't backcomb, personally, if you've made it this far without messing with them. It's more fun to let go of the control and let them do what they want. I've been sleeping with a loose tam the last few nights, and that does seem to help both sides catch up to one another, at least for me anyways.

How often should a newbie wash hair?!

Dread Maintenance

I'm a 1 month newbie, and I did the same research when I started and found that most people didn't encourage washing every day. I use Dr. Bronners mostly, and it leaves me feeling clean enough and not oily, that I just go until my scalp feels oily or dirty: 3-4 days. For locking up faster, I've been spraying sea salt water on my hair a few hours to a day before I wash, and that really seems to help it lock up. (I just pretend that I took a dip in the ocean.) I don't think you need to go 2 weeks before washing. That'd drive me crazy too.

Face Wash

General Questions

I've been using Avalon vitamin C face wash since I first posted this. It's okay, but I'm not in love with it.

Face Wash

General Questions

Heather, I'm glad you reminded me. We're moving in a few weeks and taking a trip to California. I'm putting that on my list to buy the first Trader Joe's we come by!
