Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

Also on the end of some of my dreads, their is a hard white thing stuck in them. Im not sure if it's some type of dandruff or something that locked up with my hair. I try not to worry about it, and I plan on cutting those ends once my hair gets longer. I never used wax before, but when I started my dreads my loctician used pro style gel, of course I freeform now, but could the gel be the reason for that?

Ok thanks. I don't have vinegar, and the only type of oil I have is africa's best natural herbal oil. Is that ok? And could you explain the vinegar rinse, how much do I use?, and can I use white vinegar?

I will also like to add that, I didn't wet my hair before I poured it on my head, was that a necessary step also?

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

I used about 3/4 cup of baking soda, I put it into a 3 liter container, I filled the water about half a liter, I stirred it around good to make sure all the clumps were gone. Then I filled it all the way to the top with water. Then I poured it all over my head and let it soak for 30 minutes. I rinsed it all out the best I could. But when I scartched my scalp to make sure all of my dandruff was gone, I could still notice some under my nails after every scratch. But my scalp looks clean, why do I still see dandruff when I scratch?, I thought it may be the baking soda not washed out completely, so I literally rinsed again for another 20 mintutes to make sure I got it all out, but it's still there when I scratch.Ok maybe I did something wrong here, I put the baking soda in the container first, and then added water, and the water was not hot, it was kind of cool. Was I supposed to fill the container with really hot water first, and then add the baking soda, so it could dissolve really well? And if I do it this way, and still find stuff under my nails afterwards, even though my scalp looks clean, and all of the baking soda is rinsed out, what could be the problem here?

When you have a few dreads that have very thin roots, How does regular washing actually help?

Help! Save My Dreads

When you have a few dreads that have very thin roots, How does regular washing actually help? When I finish washing I pull them apart, and as im pulling them and feeling them, I notice that some of the roots are thinner than others. they're getting longer and I like it, but it makes me wonder if they're going to be able to take the punishment of all of the future washes, and the pulling apart sessions. Some of them are real thick and strong, but I fear that the water from washing will also hurt them in the future. The ones that feel thin are mainly on the top, and the thicker ones are in the back.Their are people who wash their hair like every day, or once a week or more a week, and I don't understand how their locks can stand that. Especially if they have the thin locks. usually I've been going like 3 months before I wash my hair, because im afraid that over washing is going to thin the roots. and plus I don't really do enough to make my head sweat so I just let the dandruff build up to when I necessarily need to wash it. This is the 2nd time I washed my hair in 2 weeks, normally I would of waited for another 3 months, but last night I noticed that their was still dandruff in my scalp, and I wanted to take care of that. I mainly focused on the scalp as I washed last night. But what I don't understand is that, last week after I washed my hair, I noticed that my roots were starting to tighten up, and I liked that, because those thin rooted dreads in the top felt like they actually might be ok afterall. but last night after I was done, I noticed that they didn't tighten up. Is that mainly because the water was mainly hitting it and not much shampoo? Cause I was trying to focusing mainly on the scalp, and not the hair. It could my anxiety that's making worry about this, I want to just sit there, and let them do their own thing, but it's hard not to worry, because as im feeling them, they just don't feel like they're strong enough for the future. I know that joining 2 dreads together or using loose hairs can help strengthen them. And I've done that before. But I really hope that it's just my really bad anxiety that's causing me to think their's a problem. Because some people who have really thin dreads, seem to never have a problem, or is that because they have really thick and healthy roots? I never thought they would have really thick roots, considering how thin their dreads are. By the way I've been freeforming for almost a year now, but my dreads were formed by back combing a year and a half ago. And they have been retwisted twice, and vigorously twisted by me up until 8 months ago when I found this site.

is it true that some people have to have their dreads retwisted in order to see growth?

Help! Save My Dreads

When I was getting them retwisted I saw instant growth every time. But my loctician told me to twist them a lot, and since I was ignorant about dreads at the time, I followed her advice. Now because of that I've had some of them that thinned within 6 months, and 1 in the front actually thinned so bad that it was hanging by a string, so I cut it off. Some of the others I combined them together by braiding them. I've had my dreads retwisted twice by her since I started them at 2-3 inches in early july of 2009. And I haven't gone back in a year, the last time she twisted them was september 2009. But even though they weren't bring professionally twisted, I was following her advice and was twisting them myself up until july of last year when I found this site. When I found this site, this was my 1st introduction to the free form method. Before I found this site I didn't even know that it was possible for dreads to grow without re twisting. Im dedicated to free forming now, because I obviously don't wanna go back to twisting because of the obvious thinning that it causes. But the problem is, since I've started free forming, I haven't noticed any growth at all. But when I was getting them twisted or when I twisted them myself it showed my growth. Basically my hair is growing but it seems like the only way the length is going to actually show, is if I get them twisted or start twisting them again. I wanna do this freeforming thing, but this is stressful. And im in a dilemma because if I go get them retwisted sure I will get instant length, but my locks will get damaged. But if I continue to freeform I feel my hair is going to stay this same length forever. My sister keeps telling me that my hair would be very long right now if I was getting them retwisted and taken care of. She doesn't understand that twisting causes thinning, she's still ignorant to that as well. and plus I haven't told her about my thinning problem, cause we don't stay in contact. And I wanna tell her so bad that freeforming is the best, but since im not seeing any obvious growth, I don't wanna throw that in her face. Is it true that some people are just going to have to get their hair retwisted in order to see growth? Please give me some advice on this cause this is stressful. Thanks.
