Dread directions

Dread Maintenance

Because I started with backcombing, my dreads have started to lock pointing in specific directions. For example, the ones backcombed perpindicular to my scalp tend to stick out, then hang down. Some at the backwere combed down, so they are locking faster on the bottom with more loose hair at the top. (I'm not sure if I am describing this accurately)I suspect this is natural for backcomb method, and my question is this: As my dreads grow and gain weight will they lay a bit flatter against my scalp or will they always lock on one side faster? I am getting some really wild bends and kinks in them, which I quite like, will they all do this?

I'm not sure if you all can understand what I mean =S Here's a crude sketch, if that helps.

Thanks

Lya

yeah, really. The new curriculum has an optional thirteenth grade now, and community service hours, like a jail program. LAME. OAC was my favourite year however, best teachers and the best readings.

Introduce Yourself

Here's me and my partner. He's decided, very enthusiastically, to dread up naturally. I am so excited to see the progression of natural, neglect dreaddies.

Introduce Yourself

Hello to every lovely person here.

I've been reading information here for some time now, and finally decided to join the community (despite being excessively leery of online social networking) because I felt a genuine desire to thank everyone who has contributed to this site. Here is my story:

In my final year of highschool (OAC for Ontarians of the old curriculum) I decided that I wanted dreadlocks. My mother spent hours upon hours ripping and tearing my hair, then gooping it full of wax. After a couple of months of constant fretting with hidious, gooey, porcupine hair I decided dreads were not for me, and combed them out (which was remarkably easy since no real locking was taking place).

Now, nearly 10 years later I haveexperienced acute spiritual growth, complete with a newfound understanding, acceptance and celebration of my self as a divine and beautiful part of the universe. I did some research into dreadlocks and frequently came to this wonderful site, abundant with information on every aspect of the locking process, physical and beyond. At the beginning of January I decided this was the perfect time in my life to begin this beautiful journey.

My partner was skeptical, as he had known others with dreads that were not properly cared for, and had a negative point of view. I explained to him the signifigance of the dreadlocking journey, and the lessons that dreads can teach through experience. I explained that (for me) it was a part of leaning to love and accept every part of the world, anddiminishingthe ego-driven vanity of trying to look "perfect" that is such a big part of western (and especiallyfemale) society.

He listened, agreed, and helped me to section my hair haphazardly by gentle backcombing. At first I thought I would use wax, but after putting a little bit in a few dreads I decided against it. I had read enough horror stories, had lived one myself, and was finally convinced through the information you have all offered up that nature is already perfect, and will take care of everything for me.I scorched out the wax with extra hot water, washed with all natural, residue free, organichemp/tea tree/rosemary shampoo, and moisturized with aloe.

My babies are a few weeks old now and already further along than the nasty matts of wax I had years ago. They are soft, smell and look beautiful, and already teaching me patience and acceptance in a way undreaded hair never could. My partner is convinced, loves my baby dreddies, and thinking of starting his own. We are even designing beads together.

Also,I will add, natural locks DO look perfect to me, since they are a part of the ever perfect nature of our world, and our universe.

This site has made a huge difference in how both my partner and I view dreadlocks, the world, and ourselves. Thank you all for sharing your knowledge and yourselves, you are making a difference.
