peyote sleeves :)

Dread Accessories

Knotty's are awesome and inspired me to try my own. I found a tutorial online that worked pretty well. I am working on my firstdesign...done it over three times so far, can't get it quite right. :) But I have the stripes down now, no problem, my rows line up vs. beingstrangered though...not sure what that's all about.

What Made you decide to dread?

General Talk

I had been thinking about doing it for years and when I started I didn't really think about why. I am 30 with three kids, but my family, including extended family, didn't question it, it made sense to them, like it was a good fit. I did have a lot of friends simply as a curious "why" and I realized a few things.First of all I decided to do it now as a lesson in patience. I need patience right now as we have been in a very hard "limbo" for three years now (I should have started then!) Maybe if I am being patient with letting my hair dread then I can be patient with other things as well. Also when someone questioned my "image" motivations I realized the only image based reason I am doing it is because it is "out of the box" (the box being mainstream culture) and I think more people should examine their boxes and see what belongs in them (a car for most, a house, maybe a tv) and what does not belong in them (vaccines, public education, factory farmed meat for example, different choices for everyone obviously.) I want people to know I am out of the box girl, or at least one who examines each thing in my box and decides if it goes in or out and send a little message that not everything always belongs inside the box. Wiki even says "In the West, dreadlocks have gained particular popularity among counterculture adherents" lol, that would be me! So for me , my hair is now out of the box.

Dreading Methods

So much nicer! I had to re-do mine at about the same mark that you re-did yours, I had too few/too fat as well. These look great though, what a bigdifference!

Everyone says that if you leave your hair alone it will dread....

Dread Maintenance

I have had 3 babies and I did not always have the same amount of pp hair loss. A lot with one, some with another and none with one (not in that orderunfortunately) You may find that this second time around is better. You should also see good re-growth during your pregnancy, as hair always grows best when preggers!

has anyone seen this video? (crazy salt lady and Johnny clean cut & exchange dreads)

Dread Products

The hair on the inside looked synthetic. Isn't it possible it was a synthetic dread they cut?

Old thread :) Yes in the pic I have 66 :) Those are my start overs- a week and a half old now :)

I agree with making smaller sections for you, though it looks like you have more than 18 in the pic.

I have 29 locs now, it started with 42. Several combined and mine very in size from just slightly smaller than pencil diam. to on that fits a size 8 ring, about an inch in diam. the largest one is actually 4 combined.

BLAH. What a learning process this is ! Well all but one came out after half a bottle of conditioner and an hour in the shower, lol! I want these babies to be done right, so it will be worth it. I made an appointment to get it properly sectioned tomorrow, then I get to do it again :) I really want them to be on the smaller size, not the bigger. And shockingly my hair doesn't seem totallydestroyed after twisting and ripping and taking it all out.

I have all but the front part (long bangs) done. But there are only 18 dreads in total. That doesn't seem like very many... I like the thickness of them right now, but wouldn't want them much thicker. Are they gonna' get thicker? I should have made them thinner maybe....? How are they going to mature?
