I have done everything 'wrong' and my dreads are awesome!
Dread Maintenance
Something about this post makes me think it should be rhetorical. As all answers and input seem to have been anticipated. What is the point?

A lot of peeps seem to make conversations just to stir it up...
Well spoken.
Kudos. To each his own. NAMASTE. If it's working for YOU.. great. If it ever turns around and gives you something you didn't expect, you can always change. Peace K!
Your hair in the pic on your profile looks good for you.
Soaring Eagle's pic on his profile looks good for him.
TO EACH HIS OWN.
All hair types are different, as well as how they are maintained.
Locs and Dreadlocks... hmm.. the difference????
What was your original question?
Oh, yes..
should i be using any kind of gel or wax in my hair? I tried to answer that, but I don't think you read it.
and
Any ideas on how to keep them down? Did you put a rubberband at your scalp or at the ends?
Any other questions,.. I'll try to help..
But this back and forth nonsense is futile.
Love one another.. acceptance and tolerance are key..
Peace K!

Actually i said the dreads in the pic look kinda gross. They dont look clean and he has about 8 inches of new growth that isnt dreaded. Self hatred? Says the white man....I hate to break it to u but im black and proud. I wanted locs, not dreads in the traditional sense. And btw I never combed my hair; I brushed my hair, then when it was longer I picked it out. Shows how much u know about black hair.....
No one asked u to babysit me or waste ur time. I've already tried to end this many times but u keep continuing. I never claimed to kno everything but do I kno more than u about locs and *blk hair? Absolutely.
P.S. i haven't took the scalp pic b/c im @ wrk but ill b sure to post 1 up when I get home @ 12:30ish
I wouldn't use the wax.. a tiny bit of aloe vera wouldn't hurt. Instead of a rubber band which can break your hair as well as break IN your hair, try a wooden bead that fits snugly. Hope this helps!
What helps is to not use conditioner or shampoo for at LEAST a month before trying TNR.. Use Baking Soda and Water to wash 2 TBSP BS to 1 QT warm water.. rinse that out with clean water, then pour 2 TBSP REAL apple cider vinegar in 1 qt of water over to rinse. That will clean your hair and keep it healthy, but not make it slick. It will feel a bit coarser and will be easier to lock up. Also, definately make sure your hands are clean (not oily) and your hair and hands are DRY. If you want you CAN use rubber bands to hold the sections apart and the roots in place for the time you are doing them. After all are TNR'd though.. I would remove the rubber bands from the roots, and place a bead that will fit on ends, near the tips.. so they won't come apart. I had rubberbands in mine to hold them together but they started melting and breaking in my hair, and I had to use tweezers to pull them out. Never again. If this doesn't help.. I can find something else! Oh... please don't use wax! Your hair will be HELD in place, but as soon as that wax *washes* loose,.. so will your dreads.. It doesn't help lock them.. Just gives an illusion of being locked. It's sticky and nasty, too. I threw my wax away.. I will never do that again!
