Dry little dreadies

Dread Maintenance

Trina-Thank you.I thought that may be the case.I will use coconut or jojoba oil.Btw,your art work is gorgeous.

NatuarlWomyn-It is Emu fat. They are raised as a source of meat.A very dear sweet old wise woman I know has an emu farm. She makes her living from them. She gives me a bottle of the oil now and then.Thank you for the compliment.I've been having a bit of a hard time with how short they've gotten.I've never had short hair. They've shrunk about 8 inches.I just read Trina's blog about longing for long dreads:)It has helped to change my thinking.

Both of you pretty ladies have beautiful dreads.

Dry little dreadies

Dread Maintenance

What about Emu Oil?I use it on my face and it isn't greasy and absorbs quickly-nice stuff.I was thinking of adding a couple of drops to my spray bottle.I lightly spritz my hair with water in the morning. It gets rid of the smooshed bed head look:)

SE-Yes this damn extreme dry cold weather is hell! The summers are the only reason I stay here.My dreads have truly never been scratchy.I know exactly what you mean though. I have seen and felt the barbed wire over done crochet thing.I only started with it and my friend who did it really was good at not fucking up and overdoing it.Anyway I'm really happy with them.I need to update my photos. They have shrunk more:( but I think they look and feel so pretty.I will be happy when they are longer.I've NEVER had short hair.I will admit I've shed a few tears over the shrinkage.lol.Sorry for babbling on.What is this Africa's Best? And where do you get it?Thank you for the info.

Dry little dreadies

Dread Maintenance

Heather-I ordered a couple of the salt/earth bars as well as a few others.I would be happy to send you a chunk( I don't use it often now that my hair has begun to lock.I use a couple of her others.)This way you could try it out to see if it was for you.It is a bit pricey but worth it.Her Sacred Grounds is to die for!I'll friend you and you can give me your address-if you want.

Dry little dreadies

Dread Maintenance

Thank you for the suggestions.I don't want my dreadies to get so dry they are compromised. It has been an awful winter here!We were at -45 yesterday.I believe we were the coldest spot on the planet;)My pipes froze up mid day even with my heat on high.It was dangerously cold the past 2 days.

I order all my soap from Mama's Herbal Soaps out of Portland.Shauna is an awesome woman and her soaps are wonderful. She has dreads too and made this soap for them.In fact, all of her stuff can be used on them.Check her out.She really has some nice things.

I haven't used the Salt of the Earth soap on my hair for a long time now.I used it every other wash( maybe every 3rd wash) for a couple of months.I've been using her Patchouli or Sacred Grounds.I know that those aren't drying.I wash my hair more in the summer than now.Every 4-5 days works well for me.

I do not crochet.I only started with that.My hair never felt scratchy. It was always soft and pretty feeling. It worked really well for me.My dreads feel like they are locking up nicely.I don't think I could comb them out.I wish that you could feel them. I don't know how to describe them:)

I will try the coconut oil and acv.Thank you again.

Dry little dreadies

Dread Maintenance

My dreads are around 4 months old. I started them with crochet(please no comments about this.It was the right method for me and has been wonderful.)I do nothing besides wash every few days. That's it.I live in a very dry climate and my hair feels very dry too. What should I use to moisturize them a bit?I spritz them with water and essential oils. They still feel too dry.I use emu oil on my face.It is sooo nice.Could I use a bit on my dreads?Maybe mix it in my spray bottle?

Out of curosity which is worse?....crotchet VS. Backcomb

Dreading Methods

Actually my hair wasn't too tight and I had tons of loops. My hair has actually dreaded. Is continuing to dread.I don't know what the hell this "recovery time"stuff is.No my hair never felt like barbed wire. It's always been soft.My dreads do feel solid like dreads should. You assume way too much. You blame others for the negativity you create. You took her admin rights away because she has a different opinion than you?It sure gets your dick in knot when someone "goes against" you doesn't it?.What is up with that? You accuse people of starting trouble when they offer a different opinion.

Btw,no one has "brainwashed"me.I'm a 39 year old woman with a mind of my own.I don't think Knottysleeves brainwashes anyone. Now you on the other hand...try and twist things around and manipulate them into what you want.

I'm sure that you will delete or ban whatever it is that you do when you feel threatened. You insult people and take ZERO responsibility for your part in the nasty bullshit. You are the one who LOVES to argue just to argue.Step back-read the rules you've written-and follow them.

Out of curosity which is worse?....crotchet VS. Backcomb

Dreading Methods

I agree with you Lex.Miss Knottysleeves, you are lovely and very kind and articulate.Thank you.I started with crochet and am very happy with my dreads.I don't say a whole lot here because of the anger and nastiness that comes your way when you say anything positive about any thing other than neglect. There are many ways to do things.I feel like I have to be apologetic for my choices.I always feel like I have to add that I only crocheted ONCE so that I don't get into trouble.I do not appreciate the comment"they are all failures but ppl don't realize it.crocheted dreads are a failure even if you're fooled into thinking they're not."It's really awful when others are made fun of or told their dreads are ugly.

I understand that this is a big diverse group of people and we all have our different opinions. That's what makes the world such a wonderful place. However,WHY must there be such rude-down right mean- responses.Maybe this site should be solely for those who have chosen the neglect route. That's what it is anyway.God forbid you say anything that goes against the powers that be.I have met some beautiful beings here but they often are overshadowed by the mean negativity.

Thin/skinny dreadlocks! Help!

General Questions

Hi.I had the same thing going on with mine in the back. Mine have thickened up and you can't see any scalp at all. They are soft and beautiful-I think anyway.I have a lot of loops and nice firm round core. I'm suprised at how fast they are locking up. I noticed a big change after I started using a new soap.I love it and it seems to be awesome for dreads.Blessings-Juniper

the truth about crocheting dreadlocks

Dread Maintenance

I guess that I feel like others can do what they want to.We all have to figure our own thing out. There is enough info on this site to help them form their opinions.I have a job, kids, and quite a lot going on in my life.I do not feel the need to prove anything or get into a huge debate on the evils of different dread methods.I go with the flow-that is the beautiful thing that having dreads has taught me.

Blessings to you:)

the truth about crocheting dreadlocks

Dread Maintenance

Thank you Rockerbaby.I started my dreads with crochet.I've never waxed.I wash with homemade soap.I put nothing on them. I've been on this site for a bit now.I have to agree with you about the condescending attitude some take with any other method besides Neglect or TnR. I love my massively loopy dreads.I've not had a problem with them.I've encountered none of the problems like too tight or frizzy broken hairs that feel like barbed wire etc.So maybe there is a wrong and right way to crochet dreads.I have seen a video that shows the lady STABBING the hook in and out of the dread.Of course that is damaging.I'm a fiber artist.I took what I new about wool, spinning and crocheting and made my dreads.I did not stab the hell out of them.Instead I actually caught the outside hairs(just a few strands) of my lightly backcombed sections and truly crocheted a tube .This stabbing bullshit is NOT crochet. And I also agree that we should not condemn. We should educate.People should know the difference between crochet and whatever the hell that saltlady(?) was doing.

Take care- Juniper
