Dread Maintenance

Thanks for the responses. i havent done acv yet, i've read on it, but haven't gotten around to buying it! i was only using aloe for my own mind i guess... to tame the loose hairs, but i've noticed after a night or 2 of sleep they're back to being loose and crazy again and it's not worth my time and efforts. Will washing more often get rid of the itchy scalp and dandruff? I don't have a high pressured shower head so i'm hesitant on using the baking soda to wash with since i've noticed it leaves a layer on my scalp. I will take your advise and wash more and not stress on using aloe- just deal with it and it will be over soon enough... right?

Thanks again SE & knottysleeves!

Dread Maintenance

So I've been dreading since September. I did the TnR method- i love my dreads, but i have so many hairs that aren't anywhere near dreading into my current dreads and it bothers me to wear it down (not because of apperance) so i've been wearing it up with a hair tie.I don't know if this is hindiring them from locking up faster. So i guess that is my first question- should i leave my hair down? i've been washing it like once a month because i just dont have the time to aloe it and twist it if i wash it often. would they lock up faster if i just wash em' and leave em be? is it needed to aloe them each time i wash them and if i do aloe them each time i wash them is that bad? is there any way that anyone would recommend to help speed up the process of having all these loose hairs. my husband seems to think that if i put beads around each dread that will help- i know crocheing them is bad and what not... also i know that it depends on each person's hair, but what is the average time it takes to completly dread- i see some beautiful pictures of peoples dread locks on this site and i can't wait for mine to be mature. i also have some dandruff and i guess it's probably because i don't wash very often and my scalp isn't used to that, but each time i wash with baking soda it seems to leave a layer on my scalp and i dont want to scratch at it too much to get it off- i cant afford oils and a lot to maintain them which is why i actually did them and want to continue doing them with as little maintaince as possible with out looking like a creap. does anyone have any useful tips, or ideas? any help will be greatly appricated.

The beginning & Thank You

Introduce Yourself

Hi there,I'm very new to this site and to the dread community. I decided about a month ago that I wanted to do dreads. I've always really like them, but it never occured to me that I'd actually enjoy having them. I started off by watching the rival dreadheadhq- after watching his videos I got really excited about doing dreads and made up my mind that I was going to get dreads as soon as I could afford them. I am not the type of person that rushes into decisions and am commited to doing research before I commit to something and boy am I glad I have that personality. The only thing I found some what useful from the dreadhead hq website was a video on knowing why you choose to have dreads. It's made me much more comfortable at my place of employment walking around with a head full of dreadlocks knowing why I have them. I'm much more confident with them and could care less what any others think =] Anyways... I read, and then read more and I also went around here locally in Arizona to find someone who could professionaly do dreads. I found people willing to do dreads for me for anywhere between $90-$150, then I fell into the hands of dreadlockssite.com- I have to compliment this website and I know that if I would have went with the info I found prior to this site I know I would have a bald head and be in tears right now. After reading the site I decided to do it on my own with the help of my husband... I began my journey on Saturday 09/11/10- I decided to go with the twist and rip method. I knew I couldn't map out my head in 1x1inc squares and my husband wasn't comfortable with doing it so I had my hair stylist map out my head in a brick pattern so all my dreads would lay down nicely. After over 40 hours and 9 days later of twisting and ripping they're finally born. I haven't washed my head since the day I started and have only used Aloe to cut down on the frizzy's, but here is the 1st photo of my dreads. I want to encourage anyone reading this site and thank everyone for their posts and advise on the tons of subjects with dreading- it's truely been helpful and I'm extremly thankful! I'll post updated photos if anyone cares lol as my journey progresses, but once again THANK YOU! Photobucket
