trist n rip, was this a bad idea?

Dreading Methods

I ended up twisting n ripping my hair. I got impatient, and I think I might regret it. Right now I have some good knots from the twisting and ripping but of course they are falling out which I expected. My hair is still pretty knotted in the middle but not from the root down to about 1-2 inches past the root and also at the ends. Will it still knot naturally at the root and ends over time or should I start over?

First week, no more wax, going natural

Introduce Yourself

So this is my first week. When I wash my hair I towel dry it and shake it and it kinda just looks like one big clump of knots. Is this normal?

First week, no more wax, going natural

Introduce Yourself

Thanks a lot guys. I just noticed a clump of hair that knotted up already! It got me excited. haha. I like this way a lot better. It's exciting and fun. After washing I tend to shake my hair a lot, like a dog. Is this ok or is it better to not shake when the hair is wet?

Can I get Dr Bronners at the local store or do I need to order it on line?

First week, no more wax, going natural

Introduce Yourself

I had a friend backcomb and use copious amounts of wax about a month ago. I got half my head done and then read all the stuff on here about wax. I ended up combing out the dreads and removing the wax. Now I am ready to let them form naturally with no wax or backcombing. I just want to make sure I am getting this right... so all I do is.... nothing, right? Just wash every few days, towel dry hair, and go, correct? Do I need to section my hair at all, or will the dreads section naturally? Also what is the best thing to use to wash hair with while starting the dread process? I read something about baking soda but couldn't find the recipe. Also, Dr. Bronners something? Is this a product that you buy?

Removing waxed dreads - I'm going for it

Dread Maintenance

Hey thanks for the advice. I actually already undreaded my whole head. I washed the dreads in dish soap first and then soaked em in conditioner and combed em out. It took a while and I ended up pulling out a lot of hair but it worked. Right now my hair is perfectly straight and wax free (i think). I am still going to wash it with the body spray when it comes this week to make sure and then start the all natural process of doing em minus the fact that i'll probably be doing some twisting and ripping since i have super straight thin hair.

Removing waxed dreads - I'm going for it

Dread Maintenance

I just took 'em all out. Man, it hurt putting 'em in and it hurt just as bad taking them out. Lesson learned. Bottom line is they are out and I'm pretty sure I killed most the wax with dish soap. I already ordered the body splash so I'm gunna use that too when it comes, main as well right. I lost a lot of hair in the process too lol. Oh well. I had a talk with the girl, were still friends. She just calls me "the trader" now. As a joke. She doesn't get it. Oh well. The only thing I'm still trying to figure out is if I should cut an inch or two of the dead ends off. Or are dead ends not really a big deal? The ends are pretty beat up.

Removing waxed dreads - I'm going for it

Dread Maintenance

I ordered the body splash. Right now my head is half dreaded. Backcombed and drenched in wax. I'm going to use hot water, dish soap, and lots of conditioner to attempt to remove as much of the "dreads" and wax right now as possible. Then comb 'em out and completely remove all the wax and start over all natural. I think I'll cut an inch or two of the dead ends off too since my hair is all damaged now. I never thought I'd be this committed to dreadlocks, as this all started about two weeks ago when a friend asked if she could dread my hair. She's gunna be pissed that I'm taking them out as she's put a lot of work into it already. Oh well, live and learn. I am excited to start this process and be doing this the natural way. Any tips shoot 'em my way.

Already used a lot of wax, am I fucked?

Dreading Methods

Hey thanks for the reply. I did a little twisting and ripping just to see how it would go and it was relatively easy however I could see how it would fall out easily. I just removed all the backcombed dreads and wax from my hair and combed it completely straight again. My hair doesn't dread easily on it's own so I figured twisting and ripping might be a good way to get things jump started. Did you twist and rip all of them and then just let them be and eventually they locked up over the 16 weeks? Ryan Emmel said:
This link should show you discussions regarding Twist and Rip, which is the fastest way to force results from thin, straight hair. The results are more uniform than the natural method, and is relatively harmless. T&R dreads run the risk of looking braided or crocheted, so so practice will be required. It took me about two weeks to T&R my entire head, and all of them fell out except for the last inch closest to the dreads. My hair locked up over the course of 16 weeks.

With 6 inches of straight hair, you probably won't see anything resembling a dreadlock for a good while. Since you tried wax, I assume you want your hair to start looking gnarly soon. It's up to you.

Dreading Methods

I guess I still don't understand how the hair will dread on itself. My hair is about 6 inches right now and all I do is wash it, towel dry, shake, and go but it's never dreaded.
