just picked up on this conversation and thought I would say hi to all the fellow crone dreaders - I have just started my dread journey and I am in my forties - my kids have gotten used to mom being a bit nuts but I think this one is taking more than its usual time for my partner to understand but I say tough to him - I feel I have dedicated most of my life to him and the kids - they are all young adults now and I started having then at 21 - so I think its time for me to be me now instead of just wife and mother and employee - I am on a new journey to find me and dreading is the beginning of this journey!

Hi Erinleigh,

I love your locks! They are beautiful! I hope when mine grow up they will look that good. I have been looking for some tams but haven't really found anything I like yet and it is hard for me to fathom wearing one in this heat! I'm still looking though.

Welcome Butterfly! :-)

You should check out some tams to wear. i like to browse on etsy.com, you can find all kinds of great bargains on there. if you get a nice crochet tam, it'll give your head some ventilation in the hot florida temps.

Wish you well on your dread journey, and hope to see some updates!

Nobody says anything. It's just my own vanity, lol. I've always been well-groomed and "professional" because of my career. But now that's gone. Yeah hippiegal it does sound like we are on similar paths. I have MS - multiple sclerosis. I was so angry and fought it emotionally for so long. Now I've accepted it and try to enjoy the benefits of not working, lol. On my good days I try to do all the things I said I would do if I didn't have to work. There are some dreams I have had to give up and those are hard. But I've developed new ones, and new hobbies and interests. So my new motto is "it is what it is". And there ya go. So now I have to say that about my hair. It is what it is. LOL!!!

I have 2 children, boy and girl, both grown. My daughter is also very conservative. She doesn't know what to think of me right now! I'm sure she thinks I'll change my mind. I might. So what? That's the great thing about hair. Nothing's permanent. It keeps growing, well unless you're bald, lol. I don't have to worry about that.

So Funny! I am not married but I have two adult daughters....one is very conservative. (how did that happen?) She thinks it is a phase too. Told me she isn't worried because I will change my mind in a month. We'll see.

My partner ALWAYS asks if I'm going to cover my hair before I go out. No worries there. I look like I have a mop on my head. I do have SOME pride. I don't want to go out like this in public either, lol. Yes, I will put on a wrap, a scarf, baseball cap, bandanna, something, lol.

my husband is waiting for me to 'get over this phase' too! He says "are you gonna hold that stuff (my hair) back with something before we go out"? (yes dear, I have a wrap). Hang tight! I'm with the 'older' bunch as well :)

I agree with that hippiegal. I couldn't have done it in my "former" life. It took getting sick and having to stop work for me to be able to have the time to really think about who I am and what I want and then be able to do it. A mixed blessing that I am finally learning to accept.

Glad you're here, too. People who get dreads do so when the time is right, that's what I believe.

Hi gypsy fay,

Welcome! When you say you "got mine 2 weeks ago" what do you mean? I am using the neglect (hate that word) method. I stopped brushing/combing/styling my hair on June 17. It mostly just looks like a mop right now. There are no dreadlocks yet. I will be glad to see something that looks like a lock, lol. I am so impatient. This is going to teach me patience! Every day I get up and go look in the mirror in anticipation, but still nothing. But my hair is pretty short so I shouldn't be expecting miracles this soon.

But YAY for old dreadies!!!!!

Butterfly I am with you all the way. I am 58 and a university instructor and I have always been curious about dreads. I wasn't sure how I was going to get my hair to do it, but I did my research and like you I am now a newbie dreadie. Got mine about 2 weeks ago. They are a bit messy today but I am going to give them a good wash and dry. I can tell you I already love them! When I went to the office the first day after getting them the comments I got were things like, "they totally suit you ' You look like you should have dreads - etc.

I feel proud. Even though I am OLD I have decided that I am going to do exactly what I want in life. I don't know about you but 20 years ago I wouldn't have been brave enough to dread my hair. My time has come.

The messy hair solution for me is to tie my hair up on my head and make a big dread-knot -

So glad you're here - let's support each other!!

Got my gypsywraps yesterday and I absolutely LOVE them. They are beautiful and fit perfectly. If you haven't checked them out, they are on Etsy.

Lol at Panterra and SE. Well I will continue shaking like a dog while I can. Actually I'm getting worried that I have no tangles or anything forming yet. :( I know, I know, it's only been 2 weeks but when I see others progress I get jealous. I guess it's because my hair is short and there's not enough to tangle. I'll try to be patient.
