Practical reasons for starting naturally

Dreading Methods

I am sure that most of this has been mentioned before, but i just wanted to point out some really practically reasons for starting dreads naturally rather than other forced methods.

I started some backcombed dreads about 4 or 5 years ago (I think my prof picture is still of that time haha), i only made it about 6 months before i chopped for several reasons.

My hair is much longer now, about 10 to 11 inches and I have been going natural now for about 2 months. Here are some simple reasons why its already so much better of an experience:

1.) Comfort -sleeping with a fresh set of backcombed dreads is very uncomfortable. Its like a sleeping on rocks and it happens all of a sudden. With natural dreading it happens slowly and you never have to adjust.

2.) Natural looking - I felt like a freak when i had my fresh backcombed set. they would stick up everywhere, and i could never get my hair to part properly. With natural dreads, they form whichever way your hair already parts and the sectioning looks so much more natural.

3.) Maintenance - With my backcombed set i spent more time working on my hair than i did before i even had dreads. I was always worried about the combing coming undone or something. no maintenance with natural, the less you do the better, and loose hair doesn't even look bad with natural dreads.

4.) Enjoyment of the process - its entertaining to watch you hair form into locks on its own. You never know what you are going to get

Thread in dreads = death :(

General Talk

So i planned to spend the day removing all the thread in my dreads but when i started i noticed red bumps and huge globbs of dandruff on my scalp....long story short i went to the clinic and learned that i had contracted scabbies during my time in haiti. So instead of rescuing my dreads i spent all day removing them and applying the damn medicine. I cut them in half and conditioned them out :( you should see the looks of my scalp...On a lighter note i still have about 6 inches of hair and as soon as my head is healthy i plan to start the natural process of acquiring locks....and i sure as hell wont touch a damn crochet hook again

Thread in dreads!! oh no!

General Talk

Hahahaha! yes it needs to come out real bad.I think at this point im finding it a little humurous becuase it just makes absolutly no sense. I think the dreads will be fine if i remove the thread quickly soaringeagle said:
ok i dont need a facepalm emoticon cause i just whacked my palm into my face (ouch it was involuntary but it hurt)
umm tiny lil nail clipper scissors and carefully surgicly remove the thread.. umm u shoulda paid her to poo on your chest or something lil less risky..lol (joking u shoulda just gave her the money and a hug but kept the hands off the dreads)

that doesnt sound good so yea id very carefully surgicly remove it like if u had surgical stitches in your eyeball..lol careful to cut just the threads not the dreads

Thread in dreads!! oh no!

General Talk

K so i went to haiti for two weeks to lend my helping hand, it was a great experience and im really glad i went. The people there were fascinated by my dreads by the way. Anyways a haitian women told me that she wanted to fix my dreads? haha she said it would cost 20 bucks and she really looked like she needed the money so i just let her do it. long story short she pretty much sew my dreads with thread and wrapped it around them and now they are extremely f*&$ing tight and hurt really bad and im not really sure what is going to come of it but i just thought id see what you guys think. She said the thread would come out on its own in 2 to 3 months

Cant keep hands out of hair!

General Questions

Hey so this is a slightly odd question, since i got my dreads about a month ago i cant keep my freaking hands out of them...im always twisting them and rub them in between my fingers. I have developed a habit of like compressing them with two fingers and rolling....kind of like a palm rolling on a much smaller scale? is this bad for the forming of my dreads?

Stiff dreads!

General Questions

I did crochet and i have definatly stopped since joining this site, but they started out somewhat soft and loose and have just recently gotten hard. My question is more of will it go away? i knew that the hardness was mainly due to crocheting for the most part.My routine was washing with DHHQ soap once or twice a week, but since joing this site i have been washing once a week with baking soda(acv on occasion) and now im just leaving my dreads alone...but the hard ones are still hard and not bendy

Stiff dreads!

General Questions

Most of my dreads are knotting up nicely but i have a few that are super stiff and really hard...i mean thats cool i guess but it they tend to stick out and it feels like im sleeping on rocks. will they soften up over time? maybe the new growth wont be as hard?
