Help! Save My Dreads

Thanks everyone.one section with about 6 or 7 dreads was totally knotted up about5+ inches, and I am combing that out and going to start over (my friend separated my hair into really weird segments when we t&r'd them, lots of long, skinny, hard to define sections. I will try what you have suggested for the others. Hopefully I can get someone to help me; this is totally overwhelming to try and to myself, especially with a 6 month old!Should I separate them wet or dry?

It's not a bit, though. It's like if I lift one dread five more lift up with it. And it's moving outwards on the dreads. It's also making it really hard to keep my scalp healthy :-/

Help! Save My Dreads

I am beyond dissappointed as I think the only option left is to cob out my hair (if I even can) or cut it.I have no idea what I did wrong, but the bases of my dreads are determined to suck into one another. There are many that I cannot separate no matter what I do, and the remainder get to that point super quickly if I don't separate them each day. My fine hair seems happy to knot, just without any sense of order at all (seriously, irks like one giant knot forming on top of my head.I know the consensus here is that less maintenance is better, but that has certainly not been my experience!Super sad, cause I want to be an old lady with dreads 50 years from now! Do I have any options other than trying a perm? I don't have the time or energy to separate and palm roll my hair each day, not with three little kids!

How many dreads should I have?

Introduce Yourself

Hi there, I'm 7 weeks in and things are a bit crazy on my head! I am wondering what you guys think in terms of how many dreads I've got going.I have stick straight, fine and very thing hair (not a lot of hair to start with). I have 39 baby dreads of varyin sizes, and I'm reading all about people that have WAY more than me. I want to have medium sized dreads, not super skinny but not huge. Is this a good number!? I feel like the section size at the scalp isn't the best indicator, as when I had dreads before they were thinner than my scalp sections (again, I just have less hair per inch than most people. Also, they are all different shapes and sizes at the base. I liked the idea of them being varied, but is that going to bite me in the ass? Thanks!

Bases knotting flat?

Dread Maintenance

1st is the mega dread forming on top of my head, 2nd is a photo of two dreads at the back of my head; both have the same size and shape base, but one is knotting up totally round and the other is knotting up splayed out in a fan shape. Would it hurt anyone to wrap a little hemp around the base of the ones knotting up wide like that? I like the way a little hemp looks in finished dreads, so I wouldn't mind, but I don't want to interfere in any harmful way :)

Bases knotting flat?

Dread Maintenance

Thanks guys. Yes, the ones on the back of my head seem to be knotting very flatly. I guess I'm wondering if the whole dread Will likely be that way or just the base.

The one on top is already going to be my biggest one, so I don't want it congoing for sure! I will try to relax about the little hairs sneaking around. In general, should I let te hairs go where they want to and just rip apart congos? I feel like when I try to keep the boundaries of the bases of the dreads I'm making all kinds of loose hairs. A lot of te bases seem to have hairs tryi to join their neighbors. Is that normal?

I will post pics in a bit. Thanks again!

Bases knotting flat?

Dread Maintenance

Hi wise folks,I am excited to report that my experiment wearing a wool tam my friend crocheted for me is working out far better than I'd anticipated! I am having to separate my roots like crazy; they are really knotting up, clearly forming dread bases! I'm super excited; I am only 6 weeks in :)I am noticing several dreads, most on the back of my head, where there is a knot forming in a very flat way against my head. Does that make sense? I am wondering if it might be a good idea to tie a little hemp around the bases for a while to gently coax them into knotting together more. Or maybe this is normal and they will on their own?I also have one lock forming on the top of my head that is wildly trying to attach to the ones around it, and I keep having to pull renegade hairs out of them. Sould I do this with this one too?Tanks so much!Feeling wild and crazy with my half knotted hair :)

Help! Save My Dreads

1st off, they look wonderful! This is my second time having dreads, so I look at the awkward phase differently than I did the first time: I know it is a crucial step on the journey!I have used aloe to tame frizzies a bit and a nice scarf/wrap to hold them up and out of the way. You can pick something beautiful and no one will pay attention to the little hairs poking out the top :)
