swimming in chlorine?

Dread Maintenance

i didnt know if this post is in the right place or not but anyway I'm going on holiday in 2 weeks for a week and i can 100% guarantee i will be in the pool everyday.

my dreads actually turn 3 months while I'm there so I'm super excited, i just love them so much and there starting to loop quite a lot and there just amazing (hahaha to much dread love) but like does any one have any tips or whatever or just like dos and donts when swimming in a pool with chlorine in. like can i dunk my head right in or is it better just to tie them up the whole time and try not to get them wet, is it okay if they get splashed or if they do get wet all the time do i just wash them like normal when i come out and is it okay to wash them everyday for the whole five days?

Also i dont know what time i will be swimming it could be any time of the day up until 10pm at night so whats the best way to dry so i dont go to bed with damp hair?

so yeah just after advice and tips really :) thank you :D

Oh yeah and i use the Nag Champa dreadlocks shampoo so that will be the one I'm taking

dreadlock shampoo, how to?

Dread Products

so i finally bought theLiquid Dreadlocks Shampoo Nag Champa and i tested it on my arm to see if i would get a reaction but i didnt :D so i think its save to use on my head.

Im so excited, it smells lovely! but before i wash is there any like specific way you have to do it? I've only ever used BS and ACV so do i just put a bit of my shampoo into my hands then rub it in my roots like a normal shampoo? or do i wash all my dreads to and how much should i use?

sorry if this is a really dumb question but i wanna make sure I'm doing it right :P

Terrible roots advice on separating :(?

Help! Save My Dreads

Thank you for your advice! Ill separate the major one you have mentioned see if that makes a difference. Im just worried about extra damage after crocheting them i really dont want to put them under more stress but looks like I'm ganna have to

soaring eagle said:

honnestly they look fine i wouldnt rip em in 1/2 i wouldnt comb em out the only think i might concider is see how the last picture has what looks like several roots going into 1 dread if anything i might try to disconnect the 1 thats comming from the farthest left and let it become its own baby dread

\but really ifd leave em alone thay ac=tual;y are fine and the dreads once more recoverfed from the crochet wil thicken up to the root size

Terrible roots advice on separating :(?

Help! Save My Dreads

Thank you so much for replying!! i think I'm going to try and separate them using the way you have said, i would just comb them out but since I'm out every day at university it would be a bit embarrassing. Also I'm a wedding photographer and I've two booked in the for the next month so i need to make sure i look smart :(.

I really can't wait to separate them I'm going to have to get a friend to help me out instead of doing it by myself seen as though there on the back of my head

Yeah, locks that big aren't for everyone. And I'm sorry t say, but if you're only 2 months in, you might want to start thinking about combing those few out and sectioning them smaller. If you really really don't want to, you might be able to get away with a little olive oil OR Aloe. (Food grade aloe only, or directly from the plant). Use a tiny bit of either one and apply it to the root. Find the size of the section you want and start ripping them apart towards the tip. add small amounts of either conditioner as you make your way down. It's easy to over use both the oil or the aloe. So just use small dabs at a time. It might be kind of uncomfortable. And be careful that you don't start so close to your scalp that you can see skin between the sections. Start from where they connect into one lock. As they grow and you was, just be more mindful to separate those. But from the pics, it looks like that are of hair wants to form 4 or 5 different locks on its own. Once they are separated, they should start taking care of themselves.

Of course, they might loosen when you are done and not be as tight as the others that have been forming, but it's worth it. If you don't want super fats locks, those sections could become uncomfortable and pull at weird angles on your scalp. It could eventually start to give you a head ache, so don't waste any time. Every day they get further along and will be harder to separate

Terrible roots advice on separating :(?

Help! Save My Dreads

Ive posted a lot of questions lately but i just need help.

So I'm two months in and I've been trying to avoid this for the whole two months but its time i kicked my bum into action now before its to late. I didnt section my hair at all i just grabbed randomly and i have 4 really big dreads at the top of my scalp. There just disgusting to look at because the roots are huge and weird looking and the dreads themselves are really fat compared to the others. I have 35 dreads in total and i want to split these dreads into two basically so i have more and i won't have 4 fat ones on the top of my head.

What is the best way to do this? I would comb just them 4 out but then I'm worried that the hair will get sucked into other dreads and become even bigger and i dont really want to be walking round university with clumps of random undreaded hair all over. Also i really didnt want to comb any out at all and this is why I keep putting it off because i do love them already. so then i thought about like ripping them in half but I've heard how bad it is and I just dont know what to do :(

Its also a massive bummer that these 4 dreads are the ones making the most progress with loops and such :( so i just need help and advice really if i should comb them out and just leave them or separate them or just leave them all together :(

Ive uploaded some pictures so you can see how bad they are (i know they look hideous on these photos) the roots and dreads in question are circled in red.

Unblunting?

Dreading Methods

Yeah :( I'm just glad i found this website a few hours after getting them done or id still be crocheting now most likely! shame i didnt find it a few hours before getting them done like haha but never mind there feeling better already with this olive oil!!

oh just another quick question i was pretty of with my sectioning like i just grabbed bits of hair that look liked they wanted to chill together and in some places its a bit patchy and I've got some tiny ones and some big ones, will the sectioning eventually sort itself out and cover over the patchy areas?

Unblunting?

Dreading Methods

okay thank you ill try get some of these tight bits out then rinse it all.

And no nothing was used apart from a comb and a crochet needle, i didnt do enough research at all and copied this other girl on youtube who was using the crochet method :( the one thing i regret is not going natural.

I've been thinking about combing them out and starting again but i can't bring myself to do it so I'm trying whatever to help them

soaring eagle said:

Unblunting?

Dreading Methods

Okay thank you :D!!

do i have to wash it out after just like with cold water? and can olive oil be used to slacken some of the tightest spots in my dreads also from crocheting? or am i best to use aloe or jojoba oil for that

Baba Fats said:

I would actually have recommended the olive oil. Just use a tiny bit to start. Dab it on the tip of your lock and then start brushing the tip out. Add a tiny bit more if you need it. If they are really hard to brush out, you could grab a comb and see if that helps. But be careful.

It is a good idea to unblunt the tips. I've been meaning to do it to a few of mine, but since only a few are blunted, I kind of like the randomness of how they formed, so I am leaving them alone for now

Unblunting?

Dreading Methods

Helllo my dreads are now 2 months old, crochet recovery (only 1 day "the start day" with a crochet needle never touched it since) I'm really pleased with their progress. They have gotten so much softer and so much more flexible and I'm even finding little loops on some of them especially at the back so thats a good sign :)

When i got them done i blunted the ends of them with the crochet needle. A lot has unraveled but i still have about 6 maybe more with blunted tips and i really want to undo them. I brushed out one half blunted tip and the hair is very rough and there was some white power but I'm hoping thats just BS or whatever. I wasn't surprised at the feel of my hair (starting with a crochet needle worst mistake ever!!!) but since this is the first time in 2 months I've touched them, other than washing, i have full faith they will recover eventually.

Is unblunting them a good idea? and if it is i heard you should use some oil or something but I'm litterly broke and the only oil in my house is vegetable and olive oil haha so is it okay if i just brush the tips out?

any help or advice appreciated :)

thank you

scalp gunk, really annoying, tried everything

Help! Save My Dreads

Thanks all so much for your suggestions!!

and its kinda a bit of both, some times is chalky and some time its a bit oily :( it comes and goes though like sometimes after a wash i hardly have any then other times after i wash it theres loads. i had really curly hair though before i started my dreads so i only used to wash it about twice a week anyway three times maximum if it was really dirty

i might try theNeutrogena Shampoo Anti-Residue Formula thingy like once a month see if that makes a difference.
