How to make my dread super-permanent

Help! Save My Dreads

I think if you read the Dreaducation page it'll answer a lot of your questions. http://www.dreadlockssite.com/forum/topics/dreaducation-comprehensive

Dreads are grown over time, and so I'm not sure your hair will be able to knot enough to keep the dread from brushing out. You keep saying "washing out" and that's scaring me lol! Are you washing it? Dreads have to be kept clean with a non-residue soap.

If you were going to backcomb anymore, don't. Palm rolling doesn't do anything, and can cause long term damage if done too much. Here's a video that shows the long term affects of palm rolling: http://www.dreadlockssite.com/video/why-not-to-palm-roll

You must remove the wax. Wax prevents dreading. http://www.dreadlockssite.com/forum/topics/dread-wax-why-ya-dont-want-it

I think a good thing for you to do is try convincing your parents to let you have dreads. Here: http://www.dreadlockssite.com/forum/topics/trying-to-convince-your-parents-to-let-you-get-dreads-here-s-the

http://www.dreadlockssite.com/forum/topics/how-to-convince-parents-to (There is a letter in the comments that you can edit and show to your parents)

Really the only thing that can make a dread stronger and more knotty is time, and you don't have a lot of time :/

Bypermanent, I just mean for the dread not to be able to be washed out! I'm new to dreads so I don't really know how hard/easy they are to get rid of. But I just need ways (if possible) to make the dread stronger and less likely to wash/brush out! And the way i made it was by backcombing it, and palmrolling it! :) Thanks

How to make my dread super-permanent

Help! Save My Dreads

OH. Okay, well there is no way to have a dread in 3 weeks. It could start to knot in 3 weeks, maybe, if your hair tangles fast. SE is right about the wax, it's going to prevent it fromlockingat all.

Please read the Dreaducation page to understand more about dreadlocks.

Where to get beads? What kind to get?

Dread Accessories

I've checked out thehead shopnear me and didn't see anything. I really don't feel like going all over town to every head shop to find a bead lol.

I may not buy shirts or earrings from the dollar store. But I do buy pencils, containers, small things, hair ties, envelopes, cards, wrapping paper, art supplies, olives, etc. at the dollar store. Whenever I need a normal thing that I don't want to pay tons for, I go there. For normal plastic beads, I'll go there, or to the store up the street that sells random hair/body supplies. Or toMicheal's,their beads probably aren't dirt cheap, but they're probably not handcrafted either.

But when I buy more decorative beads I'll go to Etsy, I already have my eye on a few :) I'm not looking for quality right now,I'm looking forfunctionality, but when I go for quality I know I'll spend money. I need beads that I can lose right now.I support artists and the handcrafted movement, but I can't buy that stuff in bulk, especially if I might lose it.

I know people like going cheap...

but...why do you want to put cheap in your hair?

Yes....you might spend 10-20 bucks or more on a bead....but...do you buy your underwear at the dollar store too?

Do you buy your earrings and your shirts and pants there?

Head shops are places to find glass beads.

Glass blowers come in to sell their wares!

Art costs money.

Support artists.

Oh wow, I thought Michaels would only have jewelry beads that wouldn't work for hair.

I just got a bunch of wooden beads and a variety pack of glass beads from Michaels for a few bucks. I've been having a lot of fun with them. I like the ones on Etsy, but they are pretty expensive.

Good! I guess I'm going with the cheapo plastic ones from the dollar store then. They're just the most available to me,

I do like the idea of some glass beads though, but I don't know where to get them. I've seen some cheap wooden beads at a store up the street... but I didn't like them much.

So yeah, easier than I thought.

I guess when I feel the need for a prettier more decorative bead, that's when I'll spend more money. All the beads I think are pretty are like $10 at least.

I've really been wanting some beads to put in my hair.

I don't knowexactlywhere to buy them around my city, so I've been looking on Etsy. Beads are expensive!

I want to know what kind of beads people recommend. Can I buy cheap plastic beads? Cause I could go to the dollar store right now and buy a pack of like 250 cheap plastic beads.

If not what should I buy? Where can I buy a few beads for an affordable price rather than one bead for $10 or more?

No dreads yet, seeking help in Portland, OR

Introduce Yourself

From what I've seen a lot of people can manage TnR on their own. Sometimes it takes more than one session for someone to get their whole head though. If you can't find anyone to help you out, you and a friend could watch atutorialon youtube and take it from there.

I don't think any salon would just TnR your hair for you, and even if they would it would be awasteof money for something that's very easy to do at home. Salons are usually for a lot more of the highmaintenance/creating "dreads" kinda thing. They use special methods to sorta... create instant "dreads", very damaging.

Started with an A line bob????

Dreadlock Styles and Dread Styling

That's actually why I waited a year to start. I didn't have a bob though, I had shaved the left side of my head. By the time I realized I wanted dreads my hair was like 3 inches on one side and like 8 on the other. The weirdest thing though, was that a long layer of hair always flipped over and covered the shorter part. But it was still shorter then the right side. So I had 3'' hair under like 5'' hair on one side, and 8'' hair on the other. And in the back it was cut shorter, oh god.

I waited a year and cut it to more even-ish lengths. I still have shorter hair under longer hair though, but it's more even then it was. You can't tell, it all just looks normal now.

I was still nervous to start with all the differentlengthsthough. But dreads are going to end up all different lengths no matter what, and hair grows. So just remember that the hair will grow and you won't even remember how it looked when you started :)

Loops/snaggs in my dreads

Dread Maintenance

Look at the member's timelines or pictures on here if you're feeling self-conscious of the loops. You'll see tons of loops, bumps, zigzags, etc :)

But yeah, that's a good sign! It means your hair is knotting and progressing.
