Crochet hooks aren't ALL bad... (Not condoning the crochet method, I promise!)

Dread Accessories

Yeah it took some trial and error though. I didn't think of the foil until I permanently adhered a couple beads to a large crochet hook... oops.

So this afternoon I was given some sculpey clay, and the first thing I thought of was... BEADS! I could not for the life of me figure out a way to get the beads the right size though. And I couldn't get them to sit on their ends, so that it wasn't making flat spots. Soooo... I got out my crochet hooks, wrapped then carefully in foil, built my bead around the handles, and laid the hooks across a muffin tin. I now have Meatwad (from ATHF), a pokeball, a 1UP mushroom, a grow-up mushroom, a rainbow striped sleeve, a whorled rainbow spiral, and a pink/purple whorl bead. Tomorrow, I'm hoping the make a black/white sleeve, like a racing flag. :) Pics when I find my camera :D

Dread Beads

Dread Accessories

you can measure your dreads with a ruler. Just hold the ruler behind it and see which mm mark it lines up with.

Dread Maintenance

Yeah, I didn't want to do anything that could harm them, and I wasn't gonna just slap something on there that was untested.

Yeah, I boiled the seeds, and to make sure it wasn't going to do anything icky, I smeared some in a scrap piece of wool and left it for 3 days before I ever tried it in my hair.

depends how its made the gel from dreadlocksamooo.com is flax seed based but its boiked and extracted that waty so t doesnt harden doesnt get hard to remove at all

but yiur right cause linoleum floors are made ftom flax sed oil that hardens

the oilsare i believe cold o]pressed from the seed then t hardens

not the same as when u boil the seeds

Hmm... I dunno about the flax gel. It's great for your gut, but that stuff is like cement when trying to clean it off something (when u let it harden in a tupperware or something) so it isn't something I'd personally put on my dreads. I say forget about locking gels and just let them be.

I mean, I've felt what natural, mature dreads feel like, and they seem close. VERY dense, very smooth. And about half the length of the rest of my hair. I know they can't possibly be actually mature, but they're pretending really well haha XD

Dread Maintenance

Okay, my dreads are about 3.5 weeks old. I'm getting used to the frizzies, and the escapees. I sleep in a tam, because my hair is long, and I've always slept in a hat. When I get the itchies, I use a peppermint tea spray. I use organic homemade flax seed gel as a locking gel. I use sea salt to tighten right before I shampoo. My shampoo is handmade from an organic reishi mushroom bar soap. I dry completely after every shower, preferably in the sun. The locks in back, near my neck, are a LOT tighter than the ones closer to the front. They're smoothing out already, and almost feel like mature dreads, although at this stage I don't think they could possibly be anything close to mature yet. Any tips on how to improve my routine? And is it normal for some dreads to mature faster than others?

Hey, I'm Rhia.

Introduce Yourself

I'm not getting any familial support, either. My grandma nags me on a daily basis. 'Vicky, it just looks like you just don't brush your hair...' Well, grandma, I'm not; so... yeah.

dreadlocks changing more than your hair

General Talk

I'm only two and a half weeks in, but I can tell you the results I'm hoping for. I made a promise to myself at the end of last month, on my birthday, that I would be who I am, regardless of what people say, and how other people feel about me. I promised myself that I'll learn to love me as I am, and stop worrying about what I feel like I'm 'supposed' to be. My dreads are intended to be a constant, every day reminder that I can be odd, awesome, strong, powerful, meek, loving, protective, and round; all at the same time; and still be a beautiful person.
