Backcombers to the rescue!?

Dreading Methods

Sure! I am glad you like them! :D And thankyou I loved my last ones so much!

Blessed Earth Mama, I'm sure your new set will be just as awesome as your last one was. I save a few photos of dreads on my computer for inspiration and I have one of your old set. Hope that's ok.

Backcombers to the rescue!?

Dreading Methods

Thank you Heather. I also was not a big fan of the braided look either but when mixed in with backcombing it doesn't look like that so much. And thank you SE you def helped me feel a little better. The first time was easier because I didn't have any past experience to compare to, I just had to do it and see what happened.

All the sections are about an 1nch, not much more or less on any of them... And there are 42 of them... I just thought now would be the time to resection if I really needed to (but I def don't want to!). Is 42 too much? I wish I knew how many I had last time! If I ever counted I surely forgot!

And I know, you are right they def will not be the same as before because that is impossible! I just wanted a "similar looking" set of babies. :)And Like I said I LOVE thicker dreads I just cant make them too big or I would end up with lots of "bald" spots and 4 dreads lol...

Backcombers to the rescue!?

Dreading Methods

You know being that I have done this before I would have thought the second time around would have been easier but I am totally second guessing things here!

So I am doing a combo backcomb/twist and rip method as I did the first time creating dreads 9 years ago. The thing is I would like them to come out similar to how they did last time. Last time I also used wax and such and this time Iam not.

I had my husband section my hair for me in one inch sections. I had my boyfriend at the time do the same thing last time as well, but I think this time my husband was more accurate on sizing this time. The thing is I just backcombed a few sections and the "dreads" seem really thin and I am worried they are not going to be the size they were last time.

I thought backcombed dreads got tighter with time (after the "messy" stage) not the other way around. That being said there is some TNR mixed in but I actually think the TNR looks "thicker" then the backcombing! Is this because I am not using wax that they seem thinner then last time or am I somehow doing it differently OR do my sections need to be bigger!?

I love big dreads so I don't want tiny ones. I cannot go too big though because of my hair type (fine/straight/thin) and then i would have huge spots of no dreads.

I am just totally freaking out and wish I had pictures of my first days of dreads the first time around so I could see if it is just me or if something is different.

My picture here is off the first time around and I want them to look as close to that again as possible...

If you look in the picture below at the "dread" I am holding it is tiny! There are ones across my forehead already finished as well. Are they all going to get tighter or looser?

I wish I could remember from last time! :(

dreadlocks falling out??

General Questions

Hmm this doesn't seem like a normal issue to me. And the fact that you both are having this happen is odd. Nutritionally there might be something you guys are deficient in. There are lots of causes for hair loss though. Make sure you are getting enough protein, the vitamin B's, iron, zinc, vitamin C etc.Thyroid issues can cause hair loss as well as some bacterial/fungal issues I think. I believe Jojoba oil is good for the scalp/skin and you shouldnt have any issues applying some since your dreads are 2 yrs old. You might want to look into sage as well as I have read a bit about it as a tincture or tea applied dierctly to the scalp.

It could be related to a health condition or as simple as needing better scalp health. So hard to say... Goodluck!!!

Being a dready vegetarian :P

Dreads and Diets

I eat meat, mostly from a local farm where the chickens and cows are pastured and obviously grassfed and organic. The "label" pastured is better then free range.. Technically free range doesn't mean much unfortunately. :( But I am always looking for more ways/recipes to get more veggies into our diet! So I am following this discussion! :)

Backcombing/twist and rip or twist and rip only?

Dreading Methods

:D It is always great when you you know something health related and the doctors look at you like, wow I never thought you would know something like that. xD I have surprised my doctors many times with some of my health knowledge. Or I have even called them out on their lies (or stupidity not sure which it was lol).

Backcombing/twist and rip or twist and rip only?

Dreading Methods

That's awesome!

Good to know!

Ouch.... Yea I was looking at some of her facial soaps but for now I could only afford to try the shampoos. Maybe next time!

Your dreads must smell great with all that soap. xD

Backcombing/twist and rip or twist and rip only?

Dreading Methods

OK so it's kinda like no poo with added essential oils. :) I tried going no poo once (with my now normal hair) but I was just lazy and didn't keep up with it. AND I have some shampoos coming from that site any day now! I am excited to smell them! I got patchouli liquid and nag champa bar. I hope they work well for me too!

Sounds like you went through some not fun stuff with your scalp... I am glad you are doing better with it mostly now.

That may be one of my problems, I do use hot water pretty much every shower...

Backcombing/twist and rip or twist and rip only?

Dreading Methods

Thank you. :) Not soon enough! Since I am taking the "harder" route I need more time to get working on it. My two boys keep me busy and I just started painting my living room... But I REALLY hope I can start this weekend.

Do you have any suggestions for bad dandruff btw? I have been dealing with it for awhile now. I think there is some bigger picture as to why it is so bad with me. I am wondering if I have a food allergy or something that is making it so bad... I seriously don't leave the house without a hat lately. :( I really wanted to have it fixed before dreading but that doesn't look like that will be happening. I have read some good things about grapefruit seed extract and I have some I just need to try it..
