To congo or not to congo, thats the question

Dread Maintenance

I started with 23 5 years ago. it wasn't until I was a few years in that I decided to congo them together into 12. You should let them be thin for a while and see if you like that. If you're interested in congos later you could tie them together later and see how you like the feel of really fat locks. If you like them, keep them wrapped until they congo or put beads int them to help them along. If not, you can just the wrap off and keep separating them

A couple of questions about Dawn soap and wax removal.

Dread Maintenance

dawn is a brand. I guess it's american. I though it was more international than that, but Denmark might not be one of the other countries it's in. It's a degreasing dish soap. I guess you could find one there that's used for the same purpose.

What you want to do is get a pot of water boiling, and mix in some of the soap. Take it off the heat, obviously. But while still boiling hot, you want to dip each dreadlock into the water for a few minutes each. That will be hot enough to melt the wax out. You will need to do this multiple times and probably over the course of a few months you'll get the wax out completely.

It doesn't matter if it's a residue free soap, once all the wax is out, you will probably be back at square one with your locks anyway. After you soak them, just make sure you wash your hair with your normal residue free shampoo

Not sure if my dreads are even growing?

Help! Save My Dreads

It's taking a string of hemp/yarn/ etc... and wrapping it around the lock. You can do it simply, or look on youtube for more elaborate designs.

If you did it more recently, you could repull the lock through the hole. If it was a while ago and they are pretty much mature where they are, just leave them be and don't do it again

congo them with beads or wrap them in help if you want to get thicker ones. I started with 23 and wanted thicker ones than that. I congoed a bunch together, so now I have 12 massive ones and 3 or 4 little ones that I will probably congo together when they get longer. you'll still have the skinny bottoms which look awesome flowing off of the fatties they form.

yeah, clockwise rubbing destroys roots. That's probably what did them in.

mine shrunk for about a year. then stayed aconstantlength for a good few months before they grew again.

when you say you added hair, you mean that you took loose hairs near the lock and tried to tangle them into it, right? That's not bad. It depends on how you did it. If you did it be rubbing the root and trying to twist them in, that's what caused the breakage. Twisting and root rubbing rip out more hairs and damage the root to a point that it will be really hard to fix itself, if they even can.

How did you dad "help you with moisture"? washing them often, and a spray bottle with jojoba/essential oils/water will help dramatically with keeping them soft and healthy.

Give them time. Mine shrunk to half the original length and then grew faster then they did before I locked them.

Eagles right, they go through a stage where they shrink. then a stage where they seem to stall out on you. Then after a little while they will start growing and you wont be able to stop them.

And yeah, what happened that they broke off? I mean, I've lost a few from week roots, but none have ever broken off in the middle

Shortening/cutting dreds

Dread Maintenance

I guess it depends on how old they are. Most people I know whose were over 3-4 years old blunted easily if not right away. could also depend on hair type I guess

Something tell me that Eagle hasn't had to land a jump shot in a while. lol, sorry.

Anyway, how did you hurt yourself with a lock? Mine are 5 years old and only heavy after I wash them. Why not look into different methods to wear them up? Some people tie them up into a beehive that takes all the weight off of their neck.

If you have to cut them, I guess do it at an angle. It ends up looking ok, but it will blunt. there's no question about that. And then you'll run into all the problems associated with blunted ends.

I'm with you eagle, mine are only a few inches past my shoulders, but I want them to hit the ground one day. I don't know excatly how I'll handle them at that point, but it's where I want them

Life Issues Facing Dreads

Yeah, Eagle. From experience talking to people from that part of the world and from other third world countries, locks are not anacceptablehair style for most people. Where you might think locks would be seen all over, you don't see them in places of work or on professional people. Many businesses wont even allow people with locks in their stores/restaurants.
