Dreads as entertainment! (and a shout out to natural dreads)

General Talk

The way I get people to touch my hair is when they ask any questions about anything dealing with locks (how to wash them, how long they took, how long I've had them...etc), I grab one and hold it out for them to feel. Some people are weary about it, other go for it and are surprised at how soft they are.

The only time I ever got touchy about someone invading my space was when I was down the shore a few summers ago with my girlfriend and her family. We were at a diner and this waitress came by and flicked one. She didn't say anything, and just kept walking. I mean, I was with my girlfriend and her parents. How rude. It felt like a flirting gesture.

That was the only time I was uncomfortable with someone touching my hair. I'm that guy with no shame. I don't care what people do to me or how I express myself in public, but that was pushing it too far even for me

Dreads as entertainment! (and a shout out to natural dreads)

General Talk

I never really looked at mine when they were forming to tell if they looked like anything. But now that they are mature, that hasn't stopped me from having fun with them. My girlfriend has created her own little game with my locks where she tries to stick them in my ears and up my nose. She'll grab a few and tangle them through my glasses and around the frames.

It's not a game, per say, but it's fun nonetheless.

I love when people play with my locks. I never got that whole attitude that people have where they don't want anyone touching their hair but themselves andimmediatefamily

I have some sad news today...

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

I don't really know enough about psoriasis, so I don't know what advice to give you one that. As for braids. it's notnecessaryforCaucasianhair. Our hair locks up just like everyone else's. But braids do work. My girlfriend did that for one of her sets, and it turned out just fine.

Just another newbie question

General Questions

completely normal. Locks are a progression. They will loosen up a lot if not come out completely before they start to come together again. back combing and TnR are really just good for blue prints of where the sections will form. Back combing is not terrible. It does do some damage, but it's by far not the worst thing you could have done.

Good idea using beads and then replacing them over the loose hairs. Beads help section your hair and sometimes, even, help knot them up faster.

Keep up with what you're doing, but don't reback comb them. If they fall apart, let them, they'll tangle again. Back combing helps kink you hair and it'll be easier for it to tangle. Just let them be now. Keep using beads if you like them, and don't ever use bands.

Weird Buildup in my dreads??

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

It is most likely the wax surfacing. How long did you try to remove the wax? It can take months and months of biweekly sessions to remove it all.

When I used knottyboy shampoo once or twice at the beginning it left a nasty oily residue on my hair that wouldn't go away til my next wash.

The lemon juice is not needed at all for a deep cleaning. The BS and oils are fine to use once a month.

When you cut your locks, I'd actually recommend to cut a extra inch to 2 inches more to make sure that, if any mold grew in the wax portion, it did not spread to areas higher up over time.

If you are gong to cut them in the near future anyway, I'd say cut them today. Trim at an angle so that you stand the best chance of keeping the tips a little wispy, or at least pointed.

I find that if residue does build it, it tends to do so more at the roots than the tips, so it;s probably not from the body wash, although it could be, but most likely not. It's more than likely wax that wasn't fully removed surfacing again. Especiallyif it is only at the tips, where wax was used in the first place.

avoid dirty lakes?

Not really. I just love environmental science. I spent 2 weeks camping in West Virginia doing water testing, learning about the trees in the Appalachian Mtns., barefooting it around wetlands, talking to coal miners, and learning about what goes into restoring abandoned mines, and rebuilding cages for a mountain lion refuge.

I have to say that West Virginia is the most beautiful state I have ever been too

They'll close lakes and ponds to boats when they realize that the motors from boats hurt the habitat. Either by churning up mud or dripping even the smallest amount of oil.

Magnesium is not a problem. Humans need about 250-350 mg of it a day. It's most common in salt water. Magnesium comes from many different types of rocks. It's like calcium that way. That wouldn't be what's hurting the fish in that pond.

It could be that they die after their breeding, but salmon tend to move to fresh water, lay their eggs and then move on. They don't hang around after they lay their eggs. They move back to salt water habitats.

I wouldn't call the EPA out until I got results from a smaller service. They have bigger things to deal with in the meantime. If the results came back positive for a certain chemical, they would do more tests on the bodies of water surrounding the pond. They'd check tributaries and the watershed body. If the chemical wasprevalentin more than one area, which I'm sure it is, then I'd notify the EPA. They don't usually come out for simple water testing unless they already know that an area is contaminated. That work is either doneindependently, or contracted out anyway. So no reason to get the EPA involved until it becomes a bigger matter

Yeah, that's not due to the mud/silt itself, that's because the eggs got disturbed. But you've got a point about not wanting dead fish smell in my hair.

It's actually a really bad idea to go around stomping through streams if there are fish or other critters living there. You can kill off tons of animals by doing that.
