Helping my family accept and respect my choice to have dreadlocks?

Life Issues Facing Dreads

When I was younger, I wasn't allowed to have dreadlocks, so I got a mohawk. Only harsh thing I've had so far was "What did you do to your hair? Are you trying to be a rastafarian now? Is this the American dream for white people? Don't walk outside with a cup in your hand because people will start putting money in it."

My dreads grow stronger with every obstacle.

**Newbie Questions***

Dreading Methods

If you want to go full blown natural, each lock will develop differently, and at different rates. Hair tangles without a couple days of brushing, which is the very beginning of a lock. But to actually notice results, you're better off asking someone else. To wash, put baking soda on your wet hair, let it sit for ten or 15 minutes, then rinse with water. Then, rinse your hair with a little vinegar, and rinse with water soon after. Do this a few times a week, maybe every other day? As for drying, I blow dry mine, which I doubt is the healthiest method, then again we haven't had much sun here lately. I can't tell you how long it will take for your hair to really dread because I started with wax. In the process of trying to get the wax out. Most of the information I have given came from this site.

Loc Disaster! Gross sticky stuff inside my dreads

Help! Save My Dreads

I have had this problem. Did it look kinda like yogurt? I just assumed it was the wax I was using.

My take on dreadlocksite and SE: in response to SE's enthusiastic praise for natural dreads via a reply

dreadlockssite appreciation

Dude, this is an awesome post. This site has blessed my young waxy dreads with clean information. I look forward to washing my hair with baking soda and vinegar, whereas using dreadheadhq's soap I looked at it as a chore. I will probably throw all my dreadheadhq supplies away. Seems like the best option. Thank you SE, for this website of true, collective information.

anyone from oregon?

General Questions

Yeah it's great. You can take a jet boat tour. Can't miss the adverts around Gold Beach for it.

General Questions

I know there used to be a punk scene in Medford. Not sure how it is now though. I've had some fun times in Grant's Pass and Klamath Falls. I lived in Gold Beach for a while, but got along with next to nobody there. Small town, big gossip. Beautiful scenery though. If you skate, there's a skate park there with a lot of vert. The Rogue River has world famous salmon fishing.

Off topic rant. Need to vent...I swear I got the heart of Buddah and Dracula combined...

General Talk

This really tugs at my heart. The bigger idea is telling me, and likely many others who read this delicate experience, that "Humans suck." Now I know what that service dog's vest was saying. Shit.

Baking Soda/Vinegar results...

Saved Dreads Success Stories

Well, I was going to post a photo, but I have the wrong chord for my camera. The one I need is over two hours away. My hair has tightened up a lot, and there are a lot of knots and kinks. Once the back got long enough, I twist and ripped the rest. I get a few racist comments here and there, but I don't pay much attention. I get a lot of compliments on my tam, from Denise Black on Etsy. I wear it a lot to keep my hair out of my face. It's been a tough year, but I'm still alive :)

Saved Dreads Success Stories

So, seeing as there is a "saved dreads" section...

I used wax every other day and as my hair fattened, I used it every other week. With equal amounts of contradictory info, what was I supposed to believe? It was a hit or miss. The general consensus I gathered was the assumption that quick dreads were just that. Quick. Why wait? Ya know? That's how I saw it. So I used a lot of wax, palm rolled, twisted, and rubber banded. I would have gone to a specific salon if they didn't want $500. Before finding dreadlockssite, I was obliviously misinformed. 4months in, I end up here and find out about BS/ACV soak rinse. The first photo is one day before using BS/ACV, and the second photo is less than a week later.
