wool rubbing/salt spray

Dreading Methods

One of the methods im considering to start my dreads is the wool rubbing and salt spray. Only guy worth watching on youtube ( by worth watching i mean white guy, because there are a few african americans but they dont help much, i got straight hair) is connor trent, bur he didnt section the hair by ripping it so he got very thin dreads, some of them were too thin, so he crocheted the dreads after a month of his journey. I was wondering how long does it take for the hair to start looking like dreads, and does it have any disadvantages or things to look out for... Has anyone used the method, any tips? Thanks in advance :-)

crocheting

Dreading Methods

Well, i dont want to argue, for each his own, but i dont think you should be that judgemental towards it, at least not untill you've seen the work this guy does, as i said, hes been dong it for 10 yars, maybe more, and he's got a lot of happy customers who guaranteed that the dreads wont be damadged... I think ceocheting, if done properly and not on a dread but a aection of hair, doesnt cause much damadge, i've seen damadged dreads overvthe internet, eaven ones that have fallen out, so i was conserned, but that happens when using the hook how its not suposed, this guy has his own method which works quite well... Anyways I & I am grateful for your opinion and will proceed with more causion and reconsider the method i will choose, Jah bless

crocheting

Dreading Methods

He's not poking holes, just pulling the hair back thus making a dread, i'm not saying it doesnt do any damadge but he's very experianced and keeps the damage to a minimum, a lot less then you would think

crocheting

Dreading Methods

Theres a lot of negativity towards crochetong. A lot of people say it damahes your hair and creats a sertain tipe of look. I know a guy who's been doing crocheting for about 10 years now, he's very good at it. He can make your dreads neat or natural looking, it just depends on how he makes them and how tight... About the damage, yes, it damages your hair if you already have tight dreads and you dont know how to use the hook. But he doesnt backcomb them before crocheting. Most people havent eaven heard of this method. Yes, he uses a comb, but a normal one, and just a few strokes (sometimes not at all, depends on the hair) , just to section the hair, so when he crochetes it doesnt damage the hair, it just makes knots, and if you dont mantain the dreads they will loosen up and mature just like in every other method, anyways, peace and Jah bless, I will post pictures of his work soon :-)

Possible hair cut / free products

General Talk

Well people say to use wool because its nautural and because of its texture, ive eaven heard that tiny peaces of wool het stuck in your har/dreads thus making it knot more, somits better to use wool thats the colour of your hair, some pople use just a towel and say it works quite well, for my hair towel doesnt do anything, maybe just the wrong towel but my dread tam doues a much better job, you can feel and see the differance, but my tam is in rastafari colours so once my hair starts dreading more i think ill change what im using because red green and yellow are quite bright colours... I havent tried acrylic yarn, i dont know if it works as good, but the texture of the wool is really harsh and rough, i guess theres more friction when using wool then other materials...

dreadlock shampoo!!

Dread Products

Nobody wants to acknowledge me hahah, well you can also buy it, if you really dont want to make it yourself, its a natural soap with non of that fake stuff used for saponification, its called ly or lye something like that, eaither way it doesnt have it, its plantain skins and cocoa pods ash with shea butter or some herb oil, like palm oil etc its good for the natural dreading journey, it makes your hair super strong and almost impossible to comb out, even if you regularly comb and have straight maintnanced hair

dreadlock shampoo!!

Dread Products

You could make your own african black soap, its not that hard to make and its very water soluble, to the extend that you have to cut a peace of ot when you go to the shower so you dont touch the rest with wet hands or so it doesnt go to waste in the shower itself, also its better to cut a peace of it so you dont use to much on your dreads so its hard to rinse out...
