5 months of just washing and separating!

Dread Maintenance

Early on I thought I'd go crazy with all the frizzies and loose hair. I was jealous of people with their perfect salon locks. But you know what? I LOVE them now. They're still crazy but they're fabulous and I wouldn't change them. I'm so glad I never gave into temptation to go get "maintenance" done! I love their crazy loops and beavertails and the funny little mini dreads that come off of the bigger ones sometimes. My only wish is that they'd get a little longer so they'd stay behind my shoulders better when I'm feeding the baby!

Picture attached, what do you think? :)

Reassure me?

Dread Maintenance

Having one of those days... Someone reassure me that this frizzy mess will turn into dreads one day? I really love them 99% of the time, especially the crazy loops and balls and beaver tails. I don't love all the loose hair though. Especially when I see people I know right after getting maintenance and they look so good... I know it's bad long term but I can't help but be a little bit jealous.

My journey from 29 inches of REALLY straight hair to lovely chaos :D

Member Journals and Timelines

Another babywearing mama!! I have to put mine up and wrap a scarf around them when I have my daughter up on my back, otherwise she tries to pull them off! She's only seven and a half months so I'm hoping she outgrows this phase. I too had very long straight hair -- waist length and straighter than sticks. It's only to my shoulders right now. I've had so much shrinkage!

Yours look great. <3

Crazy mat on back of head

Dread Maintenance

Hi again all. I feel like such a newb with all my questions but here goes!

I'm about two and a half weeks in now. I didn't brush for a bit to let my hair section and then did twist and rip to get them started. Everything seems to be going fine except the back of my head, especially near the roots, wants to make a gigantic mat, all the way across the back of my head. I'm separating every day but it still wants to clump up and is really hard to separate -- there are loose hairs that seem to make a net over the baby dreads, if that makes sense.

My questions are: how hard do I pull when I'm separating? I don't want to damage the hair. And is there anything else I need to do about them wanting to join together like that? It really seems like the separation isn't working even if I pull as hard as I can. There are still those loose hairs making a mat. I really can't let them hang out together because I only have 35 or so and they'd be too thick if I let them.

Thanks everyone!

Long loose hairs

Dread Maintenance

I took y'all's advice and split the biggest ones. Now there probably aren't any bigger than 1 inch at the base. Did that a few days ago and now I'm leaving them alone. Lots of loose hair but I'm letting it do its thing. Got my first "did you do that to your hair on purpose??" comment yesterday and laughed!

Long loose hairs

Dread Maintenance

They aren't all uniform by probably 3/4 of an inch minimum and 1 1/2 inches max. I have 28 I think.

Long loose hairs

Dread Maintenance

By bases do you mean the area the hair came from or the width of the dreaded part? Sorry for my ignorance!
