Dreads that are thin near the ends?

Help! Save My Dreads

Okay so I have had my dreads for about 3 years and a half and they are pretty long now. I have had problems earlier with them (due to salons) and I came here and got a lot of help. Now I am just going natural and a little balding split I had on top of my head is finally filling up! Now my dreads are pretty good except the skinny ones that are more closer to my face (they drop down my face) appear weakened. Like they to explain what they look like I will put pics down. Should I cut these off??? I already did it to a few on the front of my head so now they are short compared the the dreads in the back of my head and now it seems everytime I wash I discover new ends that look like this. Now I see three skinny ones on the front side of my head and it just so difficult NOT to look at them because they drop infront of my face. Do I cut them off or will the eventually get thick, lock up, or combine with the upper thick part of the dreads?

Dreads look grey after washing my hair with baking soda??

Dread Maintenance

Thanks, I will right this down. I appreciate all the help everyone!

I mix it up, depending on my mood.

10-15 drops tea tree
15-20 drops rosemary (I have a pretty flaky scalp)
1-15 drops lavender

Tea tree has a really powerful smell so I use that in the bs. Since I'm really flaky, I use rosemary in my acv.

Alright, I will look for these all. How much of each do I put into the solution?

Having a couple tablespoons of acv diluted with 5 cups water really lessens the smell. Add a few drops of an essential oils and you won't smell the vinegar at all.

Tea tree oil is good for helping correct dandruff. Helps keep bugs away too.

Lavender is antibacterial, good for killing/ preventing mold and mildew.

Rosemary is good for helping reduce flakes and itching too.

In my opinion, this is the absolute best combination of oils.

Okay! Cool, thanks everyone. I will go ahead and try it tomorrow. I will get the AVC as well, it sounds like it smells good too! Maybe I will pick up lavender too, I heard that was good!

Dez Flint said:

Alright so since I have black hair texture I shouldn't use that? Alright so what oils are good for me? I didn't think that the oils that you use are dependent on hair texture

Dez, the Island Oil is no good for your dreads. Use essential oils only if you are Caucasian.

It feels gooey but as I am drying it my hair doesn't look as grey as when it did when it was wet. So should I wash it tomorrow or is that excessive? Thanks for the help!

If you mix the right amounts next time, you should be able to clean out the dirt and gunk that was left behind in the last wash. You could even make the BS mixture a tad stronger than normal. Be careful to make sure you don't add so much extra that it doesn't dissolve any more. Mix the right ratio and then add small amounts more and shake to dissolve.

Before you do that, is the grey stuff on your locks, dusty feeling? Or is it gooey?

Aww, really? I just quickly looked up the measurements online so I just threw the stuff together... Back to the drawing board...

Baba Fats said:

Do you mean 1/3 cup BS? If so, that's way too little. You should be using 1/2 cup in 5 cups of water. 1 gallon is 16 cups. So you should be using 1 1/2 cups BS in 1 gallon.

By only using 1/3 cup BS in that much water, you aren't fully cleaning your scalp. The BS only gets a chance to start exfoliating, but can't finish. That will leave you with dirt, gunk and sebum stuck in your hair. It's good that you see some dirt wash out, but there is still more there. That could be what you are seeing.

Oh yeah, island oil has mineral oil, casor oil (ricinus commonis seed oil), carrot oil (Daucus Carota Sativa Seed oil), Jajaba Oil (Simmondsia Seed oil), Olive Oil (Olea Europaea Oil), Tea Tree Oil

Aww, I don't have the ACV. I used 1 gallon of water with the mixture. I honestly wasn't counting when I had the baking soda in. So I pretty much messed up? How do I fix it now?
