Once a week is fine. More is better, but once a week is ok. Because it's so dry around you, moe dus tand dirt get caked in you hair than other places. Most will come out with water, but over that week, even with running plain water through your hair, it will begin to accumulate. And the Dr. B's will start to build up and weigh down your locks. I didn't realize that it was building up in my hair for years. It's not all that noticeable. But it does, and left unchecked it can cause problems.
Getting our locks wet more often will also help your hair lock up faster. As they get wet and dry, your hair gets more and more tangled.
I noticed that you say you live in Utah. You've got extremely hard water there, unless you have a water softener or soft water showerhead. That, mixed with the Dr. B's could be causing some of the problem. Also, you should be washing way more often. Up to 3 times a week. No less than once a week. but because it's hot out there a lot, you can wash 3 times and it should have no problem drying quickly. The more you wash, with a soap more suited for your hard water, you should not have any problem with your hair/scalp drying out
Only using it a little bit won't delay it much. But what I'd be wondering is why you'd be getting dry and itchy in the first place. What are you using to wash, and how often? Also, if you have hard water, Dr. Bronners doesn't work wll

welcome coconut oils best left till after mature but even then thers better options
Welcome. Do you have african textured hair? If not, then don't use coconut oil. It's too conditioning, and will delay the progress
