Is tying my dreads back bad for them?

I've been doing the natural/neglect method for a little over a year now and the back of my hair has come along very nicely, the sides have started but are taking a little longer and I've tried sleeping on the sides of my head to push the progress along. I was thinking about what could be the cause and I was wondering if tying my hair back when i take a shower to keep them from getting wet is the problem. Any advice is welcome and appreciated. Thank you in advance.
