For me, it depends on the tone of the question. If someone is generally curious and polite about it, I just say something like "I've had them for x number of years already and love them, so I'll probably keep them a long time." But if someone is being all condescending and patronizing, I just look at their head and say "I dunno, how long are you going to keep yours like that?"

....same problem here, esp. since I'm a middle aged white city christian woman!
no one will understand until they come on the journey!
Some friend on FB said she was having a bad hair day. I told her just don't comb it for 50 days like me. Nextcommenter thought I was joking.
The one thing that keeps me going is I don't want to go back to washing, conditioning, drying, combing styling and worrying about my hair.
Dreadlocks and others comments will teach you patience Just smile and tell them you love them for worrying so much about your hair
I've been called Medusa too and made fun of...
Hang in there!

I like knottysleeve's answer :P I get a lot of "how can you stand that rats nest?!" right now....it is disheartening but I just smile and say it's all a process and if it DOES bother me then I pull it back or throw on a hat....I also then go on to tell them how at least I dun have to take 4 hours of my life to straighten my hair and condition and worry about killing it with all these other products anymore :P
