ok so basically i work at the same company as my mom, she basically got me the job there, but she works in the office part and i work in the factory part. so this company likes everyone to look nice even the people like me in the factory we are required to wear collared shirts and dress pants, now, personally i dont think they would say anything to me but my moms is saying different, i dont know if shes just saying that cause she wants me to cut it, or she is actually being serious, oh as by the way i dont even have the dreads yet i have a fro and im in the process of letting them form naturally. but yeah like i cant quit my job if they say i have to cut it but like ive been growing this for so long and it went through so many awkward stages and i finally did what i said i was gonna do for years, so i really will be distraught if they say i have to cut it..... any advice?

So you're growing naturally. For any spiritual reasons?

If you are growing them for anything spiritual, no employer is allowed to fire you for your hair. You are protected by the first amendment. Freedom of religion.

Explain this to your mom. Don't wait until they try to fire you, it may cause bad blood between the 2 of you. Because you can sue and you will win.

That said, if you live in a state that is a "right to work" state, they don't have to give you a reason that you were fired. It's up to you to prove it was unlawful. But I'm sure your mom would tell you. And if you tell her about how it's illegal to fire you for your hair, first she won't try to say it was that.

You could probably wear a plain black tam to cover them. Which might be a good idea in a factory, anyway. Factories can be dusty and you can get crap in your hair. i worked at UPS and wore a tam to keep stuff out of my hair every day. Plus black tams look professional

what baba said..

they cant fire tyou for that in fact you can request the companies policy on hair in writting and it must be specific it cant simply say "no distracting hairstyles" and no matter how specific it may be it still cant violate your rights

I personally would quit my job if they told me to cut my hair. I have my locks for spiritual reasons but im not so sure my spirituality would be a solid argument in court.

If you live in the US, it would be. The census has a box to check that just says "spiritual". The Government does acknowledge spirituality, in any form, as protected.

I'd probably quit, just because if you do go to court and win, there would be some animosity. Then they would probably just make life miserable enough that you'd want to quit anyway. Or find other things to write you up for and fire you

And mention it to her.

Does she think they are dirty or something? I know my mom hated it when I started growing mine too

Even when mature? Mature locks look great in any professional atmosphere. Any hairstyle can look fine. Check out the mohawk guy that put the new rover on Mars. He doesn't look like your typical punk with a mohawk.
