2 year old natural dreads, strange residue on tips

Namaste dreadies,
I've had my dreads for two years now, never used any wax or any products, only crocheted and felted one dread as a test, most of them are untouched. Some have become blunt by the ends curling over and becoming part of the dread or the tips becoming brittle and breaking off, some ends are still loose. Some of these have hard strands of a few hairs coated in gluey, fuzzy residue... I wonder what this is?? It can't be scratched off or washed off, it's like the hair is somehow stuck together and the only thing I can do it cut that part off.

The bad thing I am guilty of, is using conditioner (only natural hemp etc.) on these undreaded ends so they don't break off so much, I also sometimes rub essential oils in them. Could this be what is causing this?

Love and Raspect

Ava Natty

That is just lint. It comes from sweaters...pillow cases and just about anything that is fabric. I get it too sometimes. I just pick it out.

Yeah it looks like lint, but the hairs are all stuck together with it and it's impossible to pick out

could be the lint that gets stuck in there melts or something when you color your hair? i'm just throwing ideas out there.

Do you smoke or live in the city? To me it looks like sticky gunk that is in the air of the city. Could also be from smoking.

Well by rubbing with essential oils I just mean a drop in my hands and run my hands through my hair now and then, no intensive treatment. I'm gonna try to pick these things out, dey stubborn!

Interesting point! I do live in the city and I do smoke (not cigarettes anymore though) it does look kind of black and burned and dirty in places, that's why I think it's not lint. It's just weird it doesn't wash off although I wash my dreads weekly with dr. bronners
